U23 Report: Saints 2-0 Blackburn

Show/hide article…

The goals, both brilliantly taken, would come from two unlikely sources. Right-back Yan Valery toe-poked home under pressure at the near post on the stroke of half-time before left-back Matt Targett whipped home a superb free-kick on 54 minutes to seal the points.

Radhi Jaidi’s boys began the night one point behind their visitors going into the game and at times rode their luck, particularly in the first half, against a Rovers side that had lost just once in all competitions, the night’s key moments both coming against the run of play.

Saints had conceded nine and scored 10 in their previous three matches but showed greater defensive solidity and game management here to return to the summit of Group B.

The home side began the brighter with the best of the early running coming down the right through the impressive Valery and Nathan Tella.

The pair were a constant option for Saints in the face of rising Blackburn pressure and it was the former’s directness that almost yielded the opening goal, slapping a shot against the base of the post with goalkeeper Charlie Albinson well beaten.

Rovers recovered almost immediately and looked the more likely side to break the deadlock as the half drew on.

With the 50-50s beginning to fall at visiting feet, Daniel Butterworth fired over on the angle from Lewis Mansell’s through pass and Lewis Travis’ low cross somehow evaded the waiting Callum Wright in the middle.

It took just a moment for that to all change on the stroke of the interval. Tella’s burst into the box caused indecision in the away defence allowing Valery to up the pieces, scramble inside and improvise a chipped finish past Albinson at the near post.

One became two just nine minutes into the second half. Marcus Barnes was fouled 25 yards from goal and up stepped Targett to expertly curl the resulting free-kick into the bottom corner.

Excellent midfield work from Jake Hesketh and a driving run and shot from Jonathan Afolabi threatened to further Saints’ advantage while a fine stop from Jack Rose on Matthew Platt kept Rovers out at the other end.

Saints manfully defended a final set-piece onslaught in the closing 10 minutes. Lewis Mansell struck the woodwork twice in quick succession in stoppage time but the home side never really looked like giving up their lead.

Pep Guardiola faces no action over Nathan Redmond confrontation but ‘reminded of responsibilities’

Show/hide article…

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has been reminded of his responsibilities by the Football Association following his animated post-match conversation with Southampton’s Nathan Redmond.

The FA on Friday sought observations from Guardiola, giving him until Monday to respond.

It’s understood the FA accepts the Catalan’s version of events and will not take the matter further. Guardiola has been reminded of his responsibilities and the matter is now considered closed.

Raheem Sterling’s stoppage-time winner earned City a 2-1 victory over Redmond’s Saints and afterwards Guardiola approached the forward.

It initially appeared Guardiola was confronting Redmond to complain about something, but he said afterwards he was complimenting the player. This was later corroborated by Redmond himself.

Guardiola on Friday conceded he should not have approached Redmond in such a way, although he could not contain his emotions in the exhilarating aftermath of Sterling’s late goal.

Asked if he regretted the incident, Guardiola said: "Yes. I did it in Munich, with my old player (Joshua) Kimmich, I did the same in Dortmund and had regret there after the game and the same now.

"I cannot control myself. Hopefully I will improve. What I said is what I said and what Nathan said in his statement.

"I admire him as a player and say thank you for his comments, but if the FA want my statement again I am able to explain whatever they want. If they don’t believe me I don’t know what we’re doing here.

“When I give you an opinion, I give you an opinion. You can agree or not, but if I’m explaining what happened and the people don’t believe me then let’s cancel our press conferences and just play the games. If they want to listen to me then I will do it. It’s not a problem.”

Valery: A strong team performance

Show/hide article…

A well-taken goal and a hard-fought clean sheet against Blackburn in the Premier League Cup gave Yan Valery plenty to be pleased about on Monday night, but the French defender is convinced that Saints still have areas in which to improve.

The 18-year-old was a constant threat down the right-hand side in Southampton’s confident 2-0 win over Blackburn at Staplewood Campus and his goal laid the foundations for ‘a strong team performance’ from Radhi Jaïdi’s side.

Valery’s invention in finishing coolly under pressure gave the home side the lead just before half-time and while they defended their lead manfully, the visitors made enough chances to earn something from the encounter.

“We’re always happy to win but we could have managed the game better,” Valery commented after the final whistle. "Blackburn had chances to score at the end and that was avoidable.

"It was nice to score and as a defender, you always want to keep a clean sheet. We played well as a team, particularly in the second half.

“We stood together but we know where we can improve; we conceded too many chances late on. It’s important that we take the positives and keep that in mind going into our next game.”
