FA remind Pep Guardiola of his responsibilities after Nathan Redmond encounter

Show/hide article…

Pep Guardiola will not be punished for angrily berating Southampton’s Nathan Redmond after Manchester City’s last-gasp win last week.

The FA asked the City boss for his observations for appearing to aggressively confront Redmond for not attacking more at the end of the Blues’ 2-1 victory.

Guardiola said he regretted his behaviour, admitting he needs to control his emotions better, and the FA have decided not to take any action against him.

They have accepted his version of events, but they have reminded him of his responsibilities.

Redmond also played down the incident, claiming Guardiola was “only complimentary and positive” to him.

Guardiola had until Monday to respond to the FA and said on Friday: “I cannot control myself. I have to do that. Hopefully I can improve.

“What Redmond said in his statement, I admire him as a player and thank him for his comments.”

Pep Guardiola: Football Association ‘remind Manchester City manager of his responsibilities’ in wake of Nathan Redmond incident

Show/hide article…

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has been reminded of his responsibilities by the Football Association following his animated post-match conversation with Southampton’s Nathan Redmond.

The FA on Friday sought observations from Guardiola, giving him until Monday to respond.

It is understood the FA accepts the Catalan’s version of events and will not take the matter further. Guardiola has been reminded of his responsibilities and the matter is now considered closed.

Raheem Sterling’s stoppage-time winner earned City a 2-1 victory over Redmond’s Saints and afterwards Guardiola approached the forward.

It initially appeared Guardiola was confronting Redmond to complain about something, but he said afterwards he was complimenting the player. This was later corroborated by Redmond himself.

Guardiola on Friday conceded he should not have approached Redmond in such a way, although he could not contain his emotions in the exhilarating aftermath of Sterling’s late goal.

Asked if he regretted the incident, Guardiola said: "Yes. I did it in Munich, with my old player (Joshua) Kimmich, I did the same in Dortmund and had regret there after the game and the same now.

"I cannot control myself. Hopefully I will improve. What I said is what I said and what Nathan said in his statement.

"I admire him as a player and say thank you for his comments, but if the FA want my statement again I am able to explain whatever they want. If they don’t believe me I don’t know what we’re doing here.

“When I give you an opinion, I give you an opinion. You can agree or not, but if I’m explaining what happened and the people don’t believe me then let’s cancel our press conferences and just play the games. If they want to listen to me then I will do it. It’s not a problem.”

Pep Guardiola to avoid FA action over Nathan Redmond incident following Man City v Southampton

Show/hide article…

The FA will take no further action against Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola following his heated discussion with Southampton’s Nathan Redmond, Sky Sports News understands.

The Football Association sought observations from the Catalan last week after he was seen shouting at the Saints forward on the pitch at full-time after his side won 2-1 last Wednesday.

Redmond said last Thursday that Guardiola’s comments were “complimentary” despite his angry demeanour, insisting nothing “negative or offensive” was said.

Guardiola, who had until Monday December 4 to respond, subsequently admitted that he regretted the outburst but said: “I cannot control myself.”

The incident came after Raheem Sterling’s late winner sent the Etihad into pandemonium, setting them up for a record-equalling 13th consecutive Premier League victory against West Ham on Sunday.

Guardiola’s City are eight points clear of Manchester United at the top of the table - and only United have ever overcome such a deficit after 15 games in Premier League history.

The two sides clash at Old Trafford in the Manchester derby, live on Sky Sports on Super Sunday, which Paul Pogba will miss after United decided not to appeal his dismissal at Arsenal at the weekend.

Transfer report: Hamburg will not offer Nicolai Muller contract extension amid Southampton and West Ham interest

Show/hide article…

Southampton and West Ham have been handed a boost in their pursuit of Nicolai Muller after Hamburg decided against offering him a contract extension.

The two Premier League clubs were strongly linked with the playmaker during the summer but Hamburg resisted the temptation to cash in on him before the window shut.

Muller is out of contract at the end of this season and the German club decided to keep hold of him in the hope of persuading him to sign an extension.

However, he suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury in the first game of the season and is still some way off full fitness.

According to Bild, Hamburg are now not planning to offer the highly skilled creator fresh terms while he is still out injured.

And, with his current deal up in the summer, interested clubs from outside of Germany are allowed to discuss a pre-contract agreement with the player ahead of a free transfer when the season ends.

That could tempt both West Ham and Southampton to make an approach in the New Year.

Pep Guardiola: Man City boss faces no action over Nathan Redmond confrontation

Show/hide article…

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola will face no Football Association action over his heated post-match discussion with Southampton’s Nathan Redmond.

Guardiola approached the Saints winger after Raheem Sterling had scored a late winner for the Premier League leaders at Etihad Stadium on 29 November.

The FA accepted the Spaniard’s explanation of the incident but reminded him of his responsibilities.

Redmond, 23, has said Guardiola was “very complimentary” towards him.

The Spaniard appeared to shout and wave his arms, while Redmond covered his mouth and seemed to respond.

“He commented on my qualities as a young English player and how he wanted me to attack his team more during the game in a similar way to last season,” Redmond later said.

“I told him I was doing what my manager had asked me to do in the game. That’s it.”

Former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss Guardiola said on Friday: “I cannot control myself. I have to do that, hopefully I can improve.”

Man City boss Pep Guardiola will be on touchline for Man United clash

Show/hide article…

Pep Guardiola was on Monday cleared to be on the touchline for the Manchester derby after the FA took minimal action over his extraordinary confrontation with Southampton winger Nathan Redmond.

Guardiola had been asked for his observations after accosting Redmond at the end of City’s dramatic 2-1 win over Saints on Wednesday night.

Guardiola, who grabbed the player around the neck and appeared to push him in the chest, later admitted that he ‘couldn’t control himself’.

He could potentially have faced a touchline ban if the FA decided to take the matter further.

However he was only reminded of his responsibilities and will now be on the touchline for Sunday’s crucial derby at Old Trafford when Manchester United will try to cut an eight-point gap on their neighbours.

Redmond confirmed that Guardiola had complimented him, but was frustrated over Southampton’s negative tactics at the Etihad.

City needed a 96th minute winner from Raheem Sterling to break their opponents’ resistance and extend a winning run in the Premier League that now stands at 13 games.

FA CUP THIRD ROUND DRAW: Liverpool to face Everton at Anfield

Show/hide article…

A Merseyside derby between Liverpool and Everton was the pick of an exciting FA Cup third-round draw.

The Stanley Park rivals meet at Anfield on Sunday in the Premier League and that will again be the venue when they face each other over the first weekend of January.

Not since 1932 have they been drawn together at this stage of the competition, when Liverpool were 2-1 winners at Goodison Park.

More recently they met in the semi-final of 2012 when second-half goals from Liverpool’s Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll reversed Nikica Jelavic’s opener.

There remains a chance that this will be the first third round without a non-League team since 1925, but that did not detract from an intriguing draw.

Seventh-tier Hereford - the phoenix club formed in 2014 following the demise of old FA Cup giantkillers Hereford United - must first negotiate a home replay against League One Fleetwood Town if they are to entertain top-flight Leicester City.

Fellow non-League clubs Woking and AFC Flyde must also overcome replays if they are to earn trips to Aston Villa and Bournemouth respectively.

Elsewhere, there was the romance of another phoenix club, AFC Wimbledon, returning to Wembley to face Spurs, 30 years on from Wimbledon’s victory over Liverpool in the FA Cup final.

Of the Premier League’s other top-six clubs, leaders Manchester City host Burnley, Chelsea are away at Norwich City, Manchester United face Derby County at Old Trafford and Arsenal travel to Nottingham Forest.

Former Forest midfielder Jermaine Jenas - drawing the away teams alongside Glenn Hoddle - apologised after handing them such a difficult tie.

There is also the renewal of the fierce rivalry between Brighton and Crystal Palace - who played out a goalless draw in the league last week - while North-East adversaries Middlesbrough and Sunderland clash at the Riverside Stadium.

There is, however, a danger that Premier League clubs could play weakened teams in the third round.

A full round of top-flight fixtures takes place in the midweek before the cup, and this on the back of the busy festive programme. Indeed, Spurs play West Ham on Thursday, January 4 and Arsenal host Chelsea just 24 hours earlier.

Fulham away in FA Cup third round

Show/hide article…

Southampton have been drawn away to Fulham in the third round of this season’s Emirates FA Cup.

Saints will make the trip to Craven Cottage on the weekend of January 5th to 8th, as they begin their participation in the competition.

Fulham are currently 15th in the Championship, having made the play-offs in the 2016/17 campaign.

Saints last visited the Cottagers in February 2014, winning 3-0, thanks to goals from Adam Lallana, Rickie Lambert and Jay Rodriguez.

The last time they met in the FA Cup, though, it was Fulham who prevailed, as they won 1-0 in a third-round replay, in 1999, after the sides had drawn 1-1 at The Dell.

An exact date and ticketing details for next month’s game will be confirmed in due course.

Liverpool to host Everton in FA Cup third round at Anfield

Liverpool will play host to local rivals Everton in the third round of the FA Cup next month.

It will be a second meeting in the space of a month for the Mersey rivals, who also lock horns at Anfield this Sunday, live on Sky Sports.

The draw was held on Monday night and cup holders Arsenal face a trip to Championship side Nottingham Forest while Manchester United will welcome Derby.

Premier League leaders Manchester City were drawn at home to Burnley and last season’s beaten finalists Chelsea will be away at Norwich.

‘The M23 Derby’ between Brighton and Crystal Palace was contested in the Premier League for the first time last week and the duo will square off once again at the Amex in the third round of the Cup, while Championship sides Middlesbrough and Sunderland will meet in another eye-catching derby.

League One side AFC Wimbledon can look forward to a day out at Wembley, having been drawn away at London rivals Tottenham.

And League Two leaders Luton have also been handed an enticing away day - the Hatters will be heading to St James’ Park for a clash with Newcastle.

Non-league Hereford will welcome 2016 Premier League champions Leicester to Edgar Street, if they can first win their replay against League One side Fleetwood.

And National League outfit AFC Fylde will make a trip to Premier League Bournemouth if they can upset the odds in their second-round replay at Wigan.

The third round has produced numerous upsets over the years and potential victims this season include West Ham, who are away at League One promotion-chasers Shrewsbury, and Premier League basement boys Swansea, who face a very tough trip to Championship leaders Wolves.
