Jaïdi: Pleased to go top of the group

Show/hide article…

A goal either side of half-time secured the victory, with strikes from Yan Valery and Matt Targett, and Radhi Jaïdi was particularly delighted with his side’s ability to shut out Blackburn, who had previously averaged three goals a game.

“Logic, and that’s what we wanted today, the victory and the three points.” Jaïdi began. "We’re top of the group, I know the competition is ongoing but we want to go as far as possible and we’re in a good position now.

“We defended well today, and I’m very happy with that aspect, the clean sheet. We defended set-plays particularly well. They had pace up front and we dealt well with that.”

Saints’ defensive resilience was typified by captain Alfie Jones, who made a series of goal-saving challenges and blocks, while Jaïdi’s side also secured top spot in their Premier League Cup group standings, leapfrogging Blackburn.

“There is a little improvement in terms of managing the game,” he added. "However we still could have done better in certain situations, there is still learning to be done there.

“I’m happy to be the first to beat Blackburn in 10 games, and stop that run. We deserved to win today, the boys worked really hard. We showed we’re able to compete and win against tough opposition, and keep clean sheets.”

Christmas surprise for Saints Ability participants

Show/hide article…

The group thought they were heading for one of their normal Monday evening training sessions, only to be whisked off to Staplewood Campus, where they were given a tour of the facilities by Saints legend Kelvin Davis, before training in the club’s state-of-the-art dome.

The surprise was part of the club’s Wrapped in Red & White campaign, which celebrates and rewards the community and individuals within it who promote The Southampton Way.

The Saints Ability programme, which is funded by the BT/Premier League Disability Fund, works with people of all ages and impairment.

That includes 12 schools across Hampshire, providing PE lessons and in-class support, as well as seven open-access and five impairment-specific sessions per week.

The programme also set up the county’s first Pan Disability League earlier this year, while it delivers the FA Talent Hub for talented youngsters, aged seven to 16, with cerebral palsy, visual impairment and hearing impairments.

In total, Saints Ability worked with more than 600 participants during the 2016/17 season.

Austin has Arsenal in his sights AGAIN

Show/hide article…

CHARLIE Austin is “feeling good” and raring to go for a third strike in as many appearances against Saints’ next opponents, Arsenal.

The 28-year-old striker has three goals in his last two Premier League starts and now faces the Gunners, who know all too well about Austin’s goal-scoring credentials.

Austin, who has netted seven in ten starts in all competitions, is yet to face Arsenal during his Saints stay, but has previously enjoyed success in front of goal against Arsene Wenger’s side for QPR.

Before his £4m move to St Mary’s in January 2016, Austin was struggling QPR’s talisman upfront.

He netted 18 Premier League goals for the eventually relegated Loftus Road outfit, including two against Arsenal, in 2014/15.

Having netted four in two games, including a hat-trick against West Bromwich Albion, Austin continued his streak and netted a late strike at the Emirates in a narrow 2-1 defeat in December 2014.

He was unable to prevent another loss of the same deficit at Loftus Road, but still scored with eight minutes to go in March 2015.

Austin is hitting top form for Saints and is now the club’s top-scorer with four goals, having surpassed three-goal Manolo Gabbiadini with his goal at AFC Bournemouth.

“I feel good. I’ve got more momentum, more game time and I’m helping the team,” he said.

“As a striker you want to play, you want to keep scoring goals, putting in performances for the team and luckily I’m doing that at the moment.”

It took a while for Mauricio Pellegrino to commit to starting Austin, having viewed him as a impact substitute for the majority of the season so far.

It was finally in the 4-1 win over Everton at St Mary’s that the 46-year-old manager finally turned to Austin.

He has since proved himself to be very much the missing link Saints had been looking for, scoring a brace against the Toffees and recording another striker in Sunday’s 1-1 draw at AFC Bournemouth.

With Shane Long going through a goal-drought that has now rumbled on since February for 33 games for club and country and Gabbiadini only prolific in streaks, Austin is now the man Saints can rely on for goals.

Saints will hope Austin can continue his hot streak against Arsenal, especially when considering they have not scored past the Gunners in two successive matches in 2017 at home.

In May, Arsenal’s trip to St Mary’s ended in a 2-0 Premier League defeat, with second half goals from Alexis Sanchez and Olivier Giroud.

The other match at St Mary’s was a 5-0 thrashing in the FA Cup fourth round.

Former Saint Theo Walcott struck a hat-trick that day in January, while Danny Welbeck was on target with a brace.

Austin baffled by Bournemouth boo boys

Show/hide article…

CHARLIE Austin has hailed the impact of Nathan Redmond after the England international set-up his equalising goal in the 1-1 draw at AFC Bournemouth.

Redmond was brought on at half time for James Ward-Prowse and lifted Saints after going in 1-0 down at the break, following Ryan Fraser’s opening goal on 42 minutes.

Austin, who is now Saints’ four-goal top-scorer, slotted in Redmond’s cut back to level and, in turn, salvaged a vital point for the visitors.

“Nathan’s a good pro,” the 28-year-old said. “He came on at half time and changed the game in our favour.

“It put a bit of pace in the team and went forward. He was a real part of us pushing forward and getting that assist for the goal and creating chances for us to go and win the game.”

“The first-half we were a bit sluggish and went in at the half 1-0 down and rightly so,” he added.

“But second half we put in a good performance and looked the stronger team second half and, if anything, we looked like we were going to snatch it.”

Austin’s goal, his third in two starts, was greeted with a negative reaction by the Cherries support in the Ted MacDougall Stand at the Vitality Stadium.

The former QPR man used to play nearby at Poole Town and in 2009 nearly signed for Bournemouth.

However, a transfer embargo meant he couldn’t join the Cherries and ended up at Swindon Town instead.

“I’m not too sure why,” Austin said, when asked about the Bournemouth fans’ reaction to his goal. “It’s not my fault, if anything I was going to sign here.

“Eddie (Howe) and (assistant manager) Jason (Tindall) did everything they could to sign me and I would have signed.

“But like he (Howe) said during the week, he couldn’t stand in my way and I’m forever grateful for letting me go and giving me the chance he did.”

“I’ve got family here, but it’s not strange,” he said, when asked what it was like to score against a club he’d previously had a connection with.

“I never signed for the club. If things were different and they weren’t in the situation they were in, then I would have signed for them.

“But, for me, whoever I score against I like to score goals. That’s what I’m in the team for.”

Austin, who eventually signed for Eddie Howe at Burnley in 2011, is now enjoying being back as the centrepiece of Saints’ attacking arsenal.

The £4m striker made his second start of the season at the Vitality Stadium, having spent the early part of this season as an impact substitute.

He was first in the starting 11 in the 4-1 win over Everton last week, but was then rested in the 2-1 defeat at Manchester City, before being reinstated at the Vitality.

“I’m delighted and more importantly putting in big performances for the team and scoring the goals,” he said. “Like I say, I’ve always had the belief and confidence in myself I will score goals. And going forward we’ve got a big period coming up. We know Christmas time is big.”

“I feel good. I’ve got more momentum, more game time and I’m helping the team,” he added.

“The manager knew what he was doing midweek. He pulled me in and told me what was going on.

“As a striker you want to play, you want to keep scoring goals, putting in performances for the team and luckily I’m doing that at the moment.”

These teams all have cause to make the alterations but some teams have registered some low attendances this year and may not have need to redevelop.
