🍻 Old pubs of Hythe and Waterside

There was The Flying Boat at Calshot. Used to be the Officers Mess for the RAF station. Demolished now. Back in the 80s there was a large hall attached that local bands used to rehearse in.

There was also the little club on the estate opposite looked like a very large shed.

That estate is very rough now

Ahh, “The Matelot and Tumbleweed”.

Great pub. The crack(sic) in there was excellent, back in the day.

The working men’s club in Pylewell Rd is open. Learnt to play snooker there.

Also forgot Westclife Hall hotel. Very faded grandeur but would serve under 18’s back in the day - desperate for the business. Now an old’s home with a dementia specialism, but I forget

Shame about the Esso Club. My dad worked for Esso and I saw a lot of films in the attached cinema. Played cricket for their Sunday side for a few years. Really good wicket.

So obviously missed this thread first time round.

Odd that you older guys are calling pubs that have been there 30 years “new”!!

Also, another one for the list, The Travellers Rest.

When I was 12 myself and a few friends broke in there to film it with a camcorder. There were pentecosts all over the walls and some weird shit in there. We scarpered pretty quickly.

Saw a picture of it the other day. Remember going to the cinema as a child, and played rugby and did Judo there from ages 11 - 18. Really sad to see something like that go, something so ingrained in my childhood.

The old Esso club you could get so pissed for a couple of quid it was unbelievable. Snakebites with rum and black chasers if I remember correctly.
Getting thrown of the snooker tables because an old fogey member had turned up and didnt want the rowdy young uns in the same room.

And ironically Mum C_S became an inmate back in December. Alzheimer’s free thankfully. Is loving it by all accounts.

Ditto. A fixture of Saturday mornings. Mind you the films were shite -
