I would agree that the drinks meetups are incredibly fun, but by no means the only means of participation.
There’s a whole Monkey Tennis thread waiting to be created on a Sotonians tagline, but having a Reasonably Serious Discussion on why fans of Southampton Football Club might like the cut of our jib, Saints-wise, it’s because we’re not a pack of miserable fuckers on the matter.
We haven’t really got anyone with a complete downer on the team’s prospects. Sure, we all fret, and perhaps we’re being complacent in this particular meltdown.
We’re not uncritical of the club, but neither do we spin one aspect of it into the whole. Ralph Krueger is a perfect example. We know he’s great for some stuff, crap for others and it gets called as is.
No-one’s blind. Everyone realises that football is a perilous business and we could just as easily be entertaining a weekly cup final for every lower league team. We all remember those dark days when Michael Fialka’s mum could have been our Commercial Director (?).
We do want the Saints to do well though, and it’s perhaps no surprise that the staple fayre of “Saints will never be a Champions League club” hasn’t been chewed on here.
Even after Leicester, few on here probably expect us to “do a Leicester”, but in general, the owners have been moving us slowly forward. We’re already at the Europa League group stage. I wouldn’t expect an immediate progression from that status; the competition has taken a heavier toll on better-staffed clubs.
I reckon that the Sotonians difference on Saints, if there is one, is that people on here want us to do well, even if we’re hoping beyond hope. In other places, I get the sense that it would end some people’s worlds if we were regularly gatecrashing the Champions League, and I have never ever got that.
