I’m just saying that 4-0 ought to be considered a thrashing but because we have recent history of 0-6 and 0-9, we don’t look at it like that!
You seem surprised by this, Phil.
Aribo gave better cover? Yikes.
I only saw the MOTD brief highlights but he went missing.
I was there and for what it’s worth, my attempt at analysis.
I agree totally that setting up narrow with KWP and Perrauld pushing up left us hugely exposed when they attacked wide.
Centre backs were ok. Che and AA worked hard but no support and a reluctance to shoot.
Bazunu had a great game. Stu didn’t, but as said above, not sure what he was supposed to be doing. He’s not a defensive player. Neither is Aribo, who was poor and lost. But Stu was responsible for their second: took the ball forward well, but couldn’t find a pass. Tried to beat one too many and lost the ball with us in transition.
The other other goals came from wide: we just weren’t cutting out crosses.
I thought we actually improved when Djenepo came on. JWP looks lost without Romeu. Let’s hope Lavia coming back sorts things.
We conceded four against a team who have scored at least three in nine consecutive home games and six and five in the previous two. Not many teams will do better. To get anything against a team like this you have to have zero mistakes, zero lapses of concentration and luck. We had a bit of luck, a few mistakes and concentration not bad - worked to the end - but not good enough against this quality.
Yesterday wasn’t the problem. It’s failing to beat lesser teams that’s killing us.
Edit: Having watched MOTD, I think the big selection error was Aribo, who did nothing. He just doesn’t defend or support the wing backs. Maybe Djenepo or even Elyounoussi would have been better
Hello! I did not and have yet to watch the game or highlights. I see from the varied responses I’d give the chocolates to @Polski_Filip, mainly coz I agree with him about (paraphrasing) he’s turned to shit and cant manage the team effectively
Southgate syndrome
