I think the “when men were men” had nothing to do with the “Gay Community”. In those days the word “gay” itself meant, trivial, light-hearted and his comments were aimed at those he considered members of a counter-culture who wore their hair long…and even had the awful habit of wearing shirts with a floral pattern.
Judge things “out of their time” and it can quickly make you look stupid but then floral shirts have always been…weeeellll.
I’ve got a couple of nice floral shirts that I’m just waiting to come back into fashion.
