šŸ“ŗ GOOD SHOWS (no capeshit pls)

Watched the first episode of American Gods, available now on Amazon Prime. I’ve read the book already, so know what’s coming. Unfortunately, it means I’m checkboxing the adaptation (which is good) rather than being able to assess it as a show. I’d imagine that it might be difficult to follow for the newb, but then the book had that quality first time through as well.

The arc it’s building toward is pretty decent. Not sure they have enough book material to do more than a season, but hoping they do more anyway. Great universe which I’m happy to spend more time in.

I’m halfway through the book Pap. I’ve read that they will add/alter from the source material to enabe more series to be made.

Anansi Boys is from the same universe, so they could potentially tie a lot of that in - perhaps even do an anthology series.

Better Call Saul is back, for its 3rd season. The Leftovers is also great. Fargo, likewise … US cable TV drama is of such high quality at the moment.

Watched Witness for the Prosecution (Agatha Christie) which was on BBC at Christmas (not sure it’s now available on iplayer). It was beautifully filmed and well acted. Kim Catrall was typecast again but looked fabulous in the 1920s outfits. I read loads od Agatha Christie books when I was about 11/12 but dont think I read that one but worked out who the killer was.

I am always up for a costume drama so Jamestown (Sky, Friday nights) was right up my street. A bunch of women set off to the New World as bought wives for colonists who have just started tobacco plantations in Virginia. Looks promising.

I am trying to plough through the walking dead as people at work go on about it. I am midway through season 5 but it is boring the life out of me. If I stop for a few nights, I may never go back to it but If I continue to walk a load of Americans wander around the countryside, I may end up as a zombie myself. Should I stick with it or ditch it? Does it get better?

I stopped watching after series 3 or 4 I think. I’ve never been so bored watching a tv programme and I can’t understand the hysteria that goes along with it. And I hated all the characters, I don’t think any of them had any redeeming qualities and I wanted them all to die. I’m sure they will all die at some point, but I’m not prepared to sit through 10 hours of shit per death.

So yeah, ditch it I guess…

word, i was completely routing for the fkn Zombies, but they weren’t a big part of the show for some reason. The ratio was bang off. It was 98% boring melodrama, and only 2% cool zombies being cool. Something like that.

It dies off after about season 5 to be honest, as soon as they find Alexandria and they started focussing on character development.

I binge watched season 6 and was more often than not only paying half attention to it.

Season 7 was boring as hell except for maybe the first expisode when they encounter Negan and Lucille. The S7 finale was, quite frankly, pants!

I may watch S8 but if it doesn’t improve then I’ll drop it.

Generous that figure IMHO :lou_wink_2:

They’ve stretched it out to 8 series?! I blame facebook. And young people.

@btripz @gavstar @tokyo-saint @bearsy Just a heads up but there is a whole thread on The Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead. I’ve carried on watching it. It’s alright and there are some cliff hanger moments. But don’t force yourself to watch it. I’ve given up on Better Call Saul, House of Cards and many others.

Funny that because I hated Better call Saul and now I’m really into it :lou_smiley:

House of Cards was racy when it launched.

Pedestrian after Trump got in. Retrospectively.

A couple of things to report on. First, I’ve consumed the second season of Sense8. In most ways, a lot better than the first. I’ve said similar before but what I admire about this show is that it’s genuinely adult and genuinely brave. Most shows of a similar ilk tend to make their *big* scenes the action stuff. There are absolutely no complaints on that front. Lana Wachowski directed pretty much all of the second season, and it shows. There’s a particular car chase in the finale which is as impressive as any action sequence I’ve seen on TV.

What makes it a cut above is that the show also treats its emotional moments with equal reverence, and crucially, as a viewer you feel that too. It’s still a little fuzzy in defining all of its rules, but sparkling nonetheless. See it in 4k if you can.

I’m also two episodes into American Gods. It’s fucking quality. It’s a Neil Gaiman tale being put on the screen by Bryan Fuller, who was supposed to be doing Star Trek Discovery. Superb cast. Ian McShane continues to make Lovejoy look like a fevered, half remembered dream. Coen favourite Peter Stormare plays Czernobog, while Gillian Anderson plays a version of Lucille Ball, representing Media.

Not quite sure how damn confusing it’ll be for anyone that hasn’t read the book. The book didn’t make a great deal of sense until the end either.

Lots of nudity in both shows, pervs.
