Watched the first episode of American Gods, available now on Amazon Prime. Iāve read the book already, so know whatās coming. Unfortunately, it means Iām checkboxing the adaptation (which is good) rather than being able to assess it as a show. Iād imagine that it might be difficult to follow for the newb, but then the book had that quality first time through as well.
The arc itās building toward is pretty decent. Not sure they have enough book material to do more than a season, but hoping they do more anyway. Great universe which Iām happy to spend more time in.
Better Call Saul is back, for its 3rd season. The Leftovers is also great. Fargo, likewise ⦠US cable TV drama is of such high quality at the moment.
Watched Witness for the Prosecution (Agatha Christie) which was on BBC at Christmas (not sure itās now available on iplayer). It was beautifully filmed and well acted. Kim Catrall was typecast again but looked fabulous in the 1920s outfits. I read loads od Agatha Christie books when I was about 11/12 but dont think I read that one but worked out who the killer was.
I am always up for a costume drama so Jamestown (Sky, Friday nights) was right up my street. A bunch of women set off to the New World as bought wives for colonists who have just started tobacco plantations in Virginia. Looks promising.
I am trying to plough through the walking dead as people at work go on about it. I am midway through season 5 but it is boring the life out of me. If I stop for a few nights, I may never go back to it but If I continue to walk a load of Americans wander around the countryside, I may end up as a zombie myself. Should I stick with it or ditch it? Does it get better?
I stopped watching after series 3 or 4 I think. Iāve never been so bored watching a tv programme and I canāt understand the hysteria that goes along with it. And I hated all the characters, I donāt think any of them had any redeeming qualities and I wanted them all to die. Iām sure they will all die at some point, but Iām not prepared to sit through 10 hours of shit per death.
word, i was completely routing for the fkn Zombies, but they werenāt a big part of the show for some reason. The ratio was bang off. It was 98% boring melodrama, and only 2% cool zombies being cool. Something like that.
@btripz@gavstar@tokyo-saint@bearsy Just a heads up but there is a whole thread on The Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead. Iāve carried on watching it. Itās alright and there are some cliff hanger moments. But donāt force yourself to watch it. Iāve given up on Better Call Saul, House of Cards and many others.
A couple of things to report on. First, Iāve consumed the second season of Sense8. In most ways, a lot better than the first. Iāve said similar before but what I admire about this show is that itās genuinely adult and genuinely brave. Most shows of a similar ilk tend to make their *big* scenes the action stuff. There are absolutely no complaints on that front. Lana Wachowski directed pretty much all of the second season, and it shows. Thereās a particular car chase in the finale which is as impressive as any action sequence Iāve seen on TV.
What makes it a cut above is that the show also treats its emotional moments with equal reverence, and crucially, as a viewer you feel that too. Itās still a little fuzzy in defining all of its rules, but sparkling nonetheless. See it in 4k if you can.
Iām also two episodes into American Gods. Itās fucking quality. Itās a Neil Gaiman tale being put on the screen by Bryan Fuller, who was supposed to be doing Star Trek Discovery. Superb cast. Ian McShane continues to make Lovejoy look like a fevered, half remembered dream. Coen favourite Peter Stormare plays Czernobog, while Gillian Anderson plays a version of Lucille Ball, representing Media.
Not quite sure how damn confusing itāll be for anyone that hasnāt read the book. The book didnāt make a great deal of sense until the end either.
