Envy.
We were booked for Soft Machine at the Tivoli last night, even had friends travelling down for a couple of days visit arranged around the concert. So last week a rather sheepish Tivoli phoned to say the show was off, (Iām guessing due to low ticket sales and an extra date at the 1865 added in late doors.)
However, all was not lost. Our friends were staying in the hotel at the Concorde, and it turned out there was a show in the main club last night. So instead of Soft Machine, we saw the Puppini Sisters. Great fun, different arrangements of Andrews Sisters type harmonies plus some off the wall numbers like a Bonnie Tyler hit, among other things. Different, but enjoyable.
Doves are at The Engine Rooms on Saturday 15th March. What a great way to get over the Saints v Wolves match, especially if its like last weeks abortion.
Tickets booked and Iāll finally learn how shit the venue is.
Itās not that shit. Pretty shit, but not that shit. Seen a few tribute bands down there. Itās ok.
The acoustics are pretty awful. Think Guildhall but even more abrasive and youāre on the right track.
cant get over over how good this was. I have seen hundreds of live bands including some of the biggest ⦠but the 400 unit were just so tight⦠so relaxed they could just enjoy, improvise without missing a beat, and the guitar tones from all three guitars were just so sweetā that beautiful sweet spot where the the glowing grunt bottles just start to spit out a sweet broken up voiceā¦. heaven for us guitar freaks. Moments which owed a bit to Neil and Crazy Horse, but that is no bad thing
His lyrics leave nothing behind and can make hard listening - difficult stories of death, suicide, addiction, aging loneliness and social challenges in the US⦠sounds depressing but he is a remarkable storyteller and you cant help feel they need to told.
Remarkable gig
I do think heās right at the top of the tree as a songwriter and the intensity of his delivery canāt help but carry you away.
Iāve yet to see him in person. Hopefully soon.
Do so whenever you can, two more dates in UK in next couple of days in the south with tickets leftā¦.
Talon last night at the Tivoli.
I know, just another tribute band. But they were fucking great, and it beats forking out several hundred quid plus a hotel in London to watch the real ones lipsyncing from row M half a mile from the stage.
You two really need to get to the next Zucchinis gig up in Salisbury.
They only do covers and you will danceā¦
A lot.
Most the audience will be Saints fans
Will let you know if i find out next gig
Kast Off Kinks, Arlington Arts Centre last night.
Founder member Mick Avory on drums, who also took the lead vocal for Dedicated Follower of Fashion. Dave Clarke on lead guitar and lead vocals, Mark Haley on keyboard and Mike Steel on bass. Terrific musicians, and Iād forgotten quite how good the Kinks were. I only spotted this on Friday and it was nearly sold out, but managed to get second row seats; can only guess that someone cancelled late on.
Saw the Kinks at Canterbury art college back in the day, would have been around 1971/2. They could really do it live, one of the truly great British bands, and Ray Davies is surely one of the best song writers this country has ever produced. The support act when I saw them was Babe Ruth, who were very very good too.
Starting as we mean to go on this year. Rockaway Beach this weekend . Tonight we have Hamish Hawk, Spiritualized and Arab Strap.
You in New York?
Mate of mine blagged a week stopover as cabin crew for Air New Zealand, stuck his GF on the plane and they managed to get right into the middle of Time Square
And, as I found out, back in the early days, Saudi bints.
But where there is a will there was a way
Top actā¦quite a stage presence.
