Well, Soft Machine were excellent tonight. I’m not very familiar with any of their stuff, but those two hours flew by, really enjoyed it. :+1::+1: As @Nottarf-Krap mentioned, they have the proper old Canterbury hippie sound, several numbers you could have closed your eyes and thought you were hearing Gong play (maybe the Daevid Allen influence.) A great evening, and the venue was nice too.

Musical Box, at Portsmouth Guildhall.

Mixed feelings about this one. They were good, don’t get me wrong, had a very authentic Gabriel figure and excellent musicians playing the whole of The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway.

But… I kept getting a nagging feeling that this was one of the reasons punk exploded onto the music scene in 76/77. Technically excellent musicians playing difficult stuff with great virtuosity, but somehow sounding overblown and kind of self-indulgent.

Glad I went, but I doubt I’ll go to the next tour (Selling England by the Pound) unless the bird’s keen (she missed tonight’s show, having been shanghaied into seeing her former neighbour in the local panto.)

Try & find Sometimes when we touch Documentary
It will cure you of your fear that Genesis caused Punk and you can enjoy the next tour

Please let me know when that’s on. I saw them do Selling England about 20 years ago at The Guildhall.

I think it was more the likes of Emerson Lake and Palmer, Rick Wakeman with his Six Wives etc who hastened the advent of punk. I really liked Genesis Mark1 with Peter Gabriel as front man. He was genuinely innovative and unique. I lost interest really when he left, they were never the same with Phil Collins as vocalist. I realise they were popular though and sold shit loads of albums, but IMO the material wasn’t a patch on their stuff with Peter Gabriel. But it’s horses for courses isn’t it, if we all liked the same stuff what a boring old world it would be! I must confess to being a little bit biased, I have to admit that if Phil Collins was playing in my back garden I would draw the curtains.

I agree with you. I first listened to Genesis in 1972 at the age of 13 but lost interest in them post Steve Hackett as did a number of my friends.
Went Saturday night with the better half and we both enjoyed it - she got to see the Slipperman, although I reminded her it was not John Westwood on stage. Thoroughly recommend Selling England by the Pound which will be the next concert by The Musical Box - and also my favourite Genesis album personally.

Went round a mate’s house for drinks tonight and we’ve booked Wet Leg, Iggy Pop (with Blondie opening) and Echo & the Bunnymen - productive evening!

Already got Elton John, Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen and Blur scheduled this year (the latter three in the consecutive days after my 30th) so shaping up to be an excellent year musically

Different time and with a gravelly voice Phil Collins singing it so uncool, but Selling England by the Pound was a real goosebumps moment in their farewell tour last year.
Such a relevant and powerful song/moment so many years on.

Could enjoy it as it’s just like a cover version obviously

This was good, in fact better than I’d expected.

Voodoo Room, at Wimborne Tivoli. Three piece outfit playing Cream, Hendrix and Clapton. Two sets of a little over an hour each. Very accomplished musicians and an excellent choice of material.

They play the Brook on April 7th if anyone’s interested.

Killing Joke, Royal Albert Hall.

Packed out, and a very good show.

Unusual one tonight. Lulu at Thornden Hall, an evening of reminiscing about her life and career interspersed with musical interludes. Very enjoyable and very different for me, mainly booked because the girlfriend is a long term fan of the lovely Lulu since seeing her play an open air concert as a child.

Normal service will be resumed on Tuesday night, with The Damned at the Guildhall. :+1:

Is she really going out with him?
