🗣 Gigs

That must have made your night. Did you know Blur would be playing or was it a complete surprise? I saw Blur at the Brixton Academy in the 90s. I went at the last minute with my daughter, she was going with my son but he had to pull out at the last minute so they didn’t want to waste the ticket,( they made me pay for it of course)! To be honest i wasn’t really into them at the time, i had heard the singles, it was round about the time the feud with Oasis was going on. After settling into our seats the support band came on, i forget who they were now but they obviously weren’t too inspiring because after about ten minutes of it i nudged my daughter and said,“i’m going to the bar”. Walked in the bar, absolutely dead, ordered a beer, looked around and there was a guy sat on a stool at the bar. He looked familiar, i smiled and nodded, he did the same. I sat down with my beer, and after another look i realised it was Terry Hall. My knees went because i was a huge Specials fan. Walked over, told him i didn’t want to be a pain in the arse but i just wanted to say how much i loved the Specials and thank him for the pleasure he had given me and my kids over the years. He was an absolute gentleman, i knew that he had a reputation as being a bit difficult with the music press, but he was lovely. It probably helped that the bar was empty. Had a chat for about five minutes, then he said, " have you seen Blur, don’t miss out, they are the bollocks" Went back in, took my seat next to my daughter, Blur were magnificent. She was absolutely gutted afterwards when i told her about my chat with Terry Hall, but not as gutted as my son was. He absolutely adored the Specials. So if anyone tells you Terry Hall is a miserable bastard, which many so called journalists have over the years, they are talking bollocks, it must be their problem.

I had no idea that Blur would be there. Knew Albarn would be there as he is part of Africa Express. Didn’t even occur to me that they’d do an appearance. As a massive fan since the 90s it was a real treat
My friends had wanted to leave early but realised I wasn’t moving.
There were so many people about, coming on and off stage, you’d maybe not spot some people at the back. We did also spend a while outside in a queue so although we heard all the music missed Lethal Bizzle and Yeah Yeah Yeahs guitarist apparently. I also missed Michael Kiwanuka at the end. Damn.
Slaves also were a welcome surprise they did Guns of Brixton with Paul Simonon and Pauline Black.
There was a guy called Terry Reid who was apparently a big thing back in the day.

The ticket was ÂŁ22, what a bargain for all that.

Indeed he was. Supposed to be the next big thing when we saw him at The Concorde in 1969…somehow his live performances didn’t translate onto vinyl and it didn’t happen.

Nilüfer Yanya, what a wonderful talent. Sounds as good live, as what comes out of the studio. Not sure she’ll ever appeal to the masses, but she’s amazingly talented. A very enjoyable night

At The Jazz Cafe tonight for a listen to Shingai’s ( the noisettes) new material. Such a little venue. I could stand right at her feet if I wanted. May be a bit weird. It is not super busy but already a tall guy is in front of me.

Really enjoyed that.
First up was a singer called Echoes (though cannot find anything on line about her).

Then a bit of a wait with a tall man with a man bun in front for Shingai.

Really liked the venue so hopefully will be back.

I’d completely forgotten, until i got a phone call at 7.30, but I went to see Suede at the Guildhall tonight.

Brett is still a fucking great poseur, but he was on top form and they played all the old classics.

(We all watch them burn)

Went to see Suede at Southampton Guildhall. Brett Anderson was stalking around the stage (someone described him as a peacock). He spent a lot of time down by the audience.
Great set with a mix of old hits and their new stuff.
Had a few giants around me but managed to still see the stage a bit.
And most shocking of the night I heard someone say the sound was good.

Should have sat in the balcony to see him.

That balcony I too far away.

If you don’t like Sleaford Mods then there is something wrong with you.
Loved Liines too.

Slightly different to my night out. I double booked and also had a ticket to Richard Ashcroft. The pull of pop was greater tonight.

Rick Astley was support and there was an appearance from Lulu.

And so far not really got Sleaford Mods. But enjoying Idles.

I think Eric & I saw them in Dubai.
Blurred memories of a green room crowd surfing & mosh pits.
No memories of music
And pain, blinding pain the next day.
Back, neck, arms and ears, there may have been a hangover on there also.

I think it may have been Eric crowd surfing

What a treat yesterday was. Even with a bit of rain we hadn’t factored in.

Headed to All Points East festival for Christine and the Queens. Just down he road from us.
Checked out some acts that will also be at Glastonbury. Kurt Vile was alright. We were sheltering from rain when Kamasi Washington was on.

I enjoyed Metronomy far more than my partner.
A lot of the youth seemed to like a band called Honne.

We then headed to the “back of the front” so we were leaning against the barrier. But this meant we were on the corner of the runway out into the crowd.
I’ve not been that close in a festival/large gig ever.
The choreography was stunning alongside the songs.

I wished I’d gone to see Chris at the Apollo last year now. Even my partner would now do a mid week gig outing (high praise indeed).

Oh and these two blokes annoyed me once I’d got a nice spot.

And reckon Norman the drummer from IT Crowd was stood near us too.

This was also a training exercise in getting near the front for the Killers at Glastonbury.
