When will they learn just to release a game when itās finished?
One of my favourite games ever is xcom 2, so buggy* it made bertie on this site look like a rank fucking amateur, did they patch it? Did they fuck, and it broke my heart because a game I loved playing was essentially unplayable RIP
Itās one of my three big peeves with the influence of the Internet on gaming.
The other two would be every game being a fucking shop, and the majority of retro YouTube gaming channels thinking that their cookie cutter formulaic bollocks is going to be suitable for middle aged men.
My PS5, when itās on, is mostly a GT7 machine. Itās technically excellent and the seem to have offered the right options to make it less about shunting and more about proper racing.
However, as previously stated, Cyberpunk is taking up most of my time and I am playing that on Series X. If something is on both machines, Series X is going to be my choice unless the haptic feedback is supported on the PS5 version.
So Iāve managed to complete Cyberpunk 2077 using the Nomad path. At the start of the game, you can pick a life story from a choice of three, nomad, street kid or corpo.
Each choice has a unique ending you can go for - and the questlines leading up to it are not insubstantial. I wonāt spoil anything for the Nomad ending, but was impressed enough to re-roll a street kid.
Another Black Friday pick up. Got Ratchet & Clank : A Rift Apart. Iām not sure that there is a bad entry in the series. I played the PS2 original and was very impressed. This is probably the best looking platformer to date on any format.
The mechanics were always sound, especially the upgrading of each weapon based on how much you use it. A nice break from a pretty hectic week.
Itās still Cyberpunk 2077 that is taking up most of my gaming time. I am on my second playthrough and am taking a lot more time on side missions this time around.
Iāve concentrated on building a character with largely non-lethal skills. Apparently, blunt weapons are just non-lethal in the Cyberpunk world. To augment this, Iāve managed to get my character upgraded in all kinds of ways. She has Gorilla Arms and Legs that allow her to double jump.
The latter alone, complemented with high computing skills, makes it a very different game. You can easily jump onto a rooftop, taking people out one by one, avoiding getting seen by exploiting the natural blind spots associated with roofs.
I donāt think Iāll do a third playthrough. Iām not that arsed, but confusingly, Cyberpun 2077, released in 2020, is my favourite game of 2022.
So I am coming to the natural end of my Cyberpunk experience. Iāve logged a disgusting 67 hours of my life to my second save game, although I will happily admit that Iāve lingered a lot more in this one, taking every side activity going.
I hit the Street Cred cap some time ago, but I still havenāt hit the level cap.
I think the biggest disappointment of the game, technically, are the bugs. The biggest outstanding glitch happens with items, something I suspect caused by no long term knowledge of how Quick Resume works, is resolvable by just restarting your console.
Not game-breaking, but fucking annoying. Slightly less annoying is a scenario where you travel with an NPC and they just stop the car and nothing else happens. Iāve had this on two separate playthroghs. I got through it because fortunately (and perhaps in expectation) most missions give you the option to drive with someone or meet them there.
Itās quite funny when you consider Cyberpunk 2077ās overall concept with its implementation. The whole world is predicated on people taking messy, imperfect systems that the player gets to continuously exploit.Cyberpunk today is much much better than it was in 2020, but you can still continuously exploit the game.
Thatās a design choice, not a failing. When you plough a shitload of points into hacking, you should be able to just turn up outside a building, look at a surveillance camera and then proceed to take everyone inside the building out, without moving.
And I am done in Night City. For now. I think I might replay it in a few years once I have a new lovely PC. Iāve explored three of the five endings and one of them is not really of interest at present.
Itās a tour de force. It still has some bugs but nothing anyone whoās played a big open world game wonāt be able to get over with reloading a save.
DLC will be out in a year or so and will feature Idris Elba, but for now, I think it might be sensible to start playing something else before I start trying to create my own cyberware with toasters, etc.
Iāve been playing Marvel Suns, a turn based strategy game by Firaxis studios, famous for modernising the X-Com franchise, Civilzation and others.
To say that it borrows heavily from other games is an understatement. It has pilfered the friendship system from Fire Emblem (but removed any potential for boning). The combat system is based on mechanics youād find in games like Hearthstone. The super moves you do feel very much like high def versions of the Final Fantasy summons.
And of course, it borrows a lot from X-Com, which is why I spent about ten hours playing it like a moron over the weekend before restarting in shame.
The meat of the game is marvellous and less staid than X-Com. You get given a hand of moves you can use each turn, along with somew environmental stuff you can use. The results are quite marvellous. Knocking Hydra soldiers about like skittles into conventiently placed barrels of fuel.
Wouldnāt recommend it at full price but a worthy purchase if you can get it cheap.
Iāve been playing an indie game called āDredgeā, a lovecraftian horror fishing game. Yes fishing. Pretty addictive, catch fish to make money, lots of exploration, upgrade your boat, solve the mystery and try not to descend into paranoia or succumb to the monsters from the abyss.
Iām very late to this party, but the game that is getting most of my attention at the minute is Ghosts of Tsushima, a western-produced game about samurai in feudal Japan during a Mongol invasion of their island.
Itās a stunningly beautiful game at times, bursting with flowers, rousing sunsets and vistas which just look gorgeous when seeing them for the first time.
There are some issues, the most notable being realism in costume choices. You get loads of different costumes for different purposes, so not only do I find myself constantly switching during travel, I normally have to switch costume mid battle depending on the situation.
Beyonce costume change deparmtnet eat your heart out.
Iāve been into a few PC games lately. Something that I loved for about a week is a game called Dredge, a weird mashup of Wind Waker, golf games and Tetris.
You control a fishing boat and have to potter around various islands catching fish or dredging salvage. The fish you can sell for cash. The salvage is used to upgrade your boat.
Actually catching fish is the bit that is like a golf game. Thereās a swingometer which has green bits you have to hit. Storing them in your boat is the Tetris bit. Your cargo hold is made up of squares and all the fish are different combinations of squares.
My boat is fully upgraded, I still have some quests to do. For 17 quid, Iām a happy man.
