Fonte Off?

Which bit is not true, though?

Anyone with an instagram account able to confirm this??

However he doesn’t say which parts are “not true”

He hasn’t refused to sign a new contract, apparently.

The club haven’t offered him a new one.

Here’s a novel concept…if he is off, how about we sell him to a Portuguese side? Or just not a Premier League rival. I like how Pelle can’t come back to haunt us.

He did say a while back he would like to end his career back in his native Portugal.

I wouldn’t object to that but history has a way of telling us that it will be a ‘last big payday’ move to a club where he won’t play. Oh well, it is what it is.

Romeu leaving is probably more of an immediate concern. He will only have 18 months left unless I’ve missed an announcement. It would be ‘very Saints’ to flog him now that his value has sufficiently increased from the £5m we paid for him!

Tell you what…let’s imagine a problem where none exists. It’s what makes the world go round these days.

Happy Christmas all. :lou_wink_2:

No, but I know that Arabian Eric follows him on Twitter.

I’ll ask him.

I think we may have the subtle distinction between not signing a new contract (as you are still negotiating) and not being offered a new contract (that you are happy with.)

I suspect this is all bargaining - but if so, Jose needs to be careful how many contracts he declines.

The offers will stop at some point and it looks cold out there.

Fonte is a Saints legend, no doubt about it, from league 1, when he could have gone and played at a higher leve, along with a lot of the team at the time. Right though to premier league and Europe.

He may move on and if he does I will be a little sad about it, but he is 33, so we will be looking to replace him in the next 2/3 years anyway.

If we are still in Europe by the end of tomorrow, I think we may see him play in the knock out stages. Also if we reach the league cup final, could have a huge impact on if he stays or not.

I am not 100% sure that he really wants to leave, but he maybe thinking on last payday, HIS career and I would not mind this for him, as I said, he has been a great servant to the club and I have a lot of respect for him.

All this talk about a “last big pay day” is £60k a week (2.5 times the natioanl average yearly wage) not enough these days.

He can earn in half a year what most people will take a lifetime to earn, not including bonuses, tax avoidance schemes, image rights etc. etc. etc.

They really do live in a different world don’t they.

I think the overall problem with Fonte is pretty simple:

  1. We don’t want to offer a longer contract because he is getting old

  2. Fonte wants a longer contract because he is getting old

  3. Fonte’s agent is a massive agitating cunt

These three facts represent the sole reasons behind all the hooha, and they will end in Fonte leaving, possibly in Jan, which is a real shame because I don’t think he actively wanted to go.

Putting aside all of the agent-driven nonesense - we saw our captain go from League One to winning the European Championship. :astonished:

Just like Rickie’s journey, that was a pretty cool ride for all of us!

So if he does go, let’s just ignore the annoying paper talk and wish him well.

(as long as he doesn’t go all Lallana on us!)

If he is in the starting line up for Thursday will everyone shut the fuck up about him leaving in January?

Maybe

If it makes you feel better :lou_is_a_flirt:

Apparently he said he was offered a pay rise in the summer which he was entltled to turn down. Fair enough. The club is entitled not to offer one of their older players a longer, expensive contract. I don’t think the club has done anything wrong here. He is also right, he doesnt have to accept more money for the same contract he signed last year if he doesnt want to. If he means he is off, so be it. Probably the best he will do is Everton (assuming they want him) so good luck with that. I would very very surprised if he ends up at United, but stranger things have happened (Caulker to Liverpool for example). He was a bargain for us and fair play to dropping down to Division 1 to help us with our journey. But all things come to an end so if you do go, good luck elsewhere and thanks for everything!

No. It will just mean he’s going to Everton instead on Man Utd!

Man Utd kick-off at 18:00 so we’ll know by the time our game kicks off whether they have qualified or not. Expect Fonte to be in the starting line-up and then to pick up and “injury” in the warm up if Utd do qualify for the next round!

My man on the ground at Finch Farm has said they are interested but when I asked about wages he was very quick to point out they won’t be paying over the odds or anywhere near double his wages, not a chance was his very words.
