If Everton sign Fonte, their three centre-halves going into the start of next season will be a 33-year old Williams, a 33-year old Fonte and a 35-year old Jagielka if they don’t sign yet more defenders. Weird policy to say the least given that their defence needs a knife taken to it and a complete overhaul rather than a stopgap in the form of Jose.
Similarly, at United he’d be a pure back-up to be used exclusively in the cup games and second legs of already-won Europa League ties. I guess there’d be a solid salary there for him but…meh? Does actually playing football not bother him that much?
I just don’t get what either of them, or Jose see in each other. It’s Lambert to Liverpool all over again, minus the boyhood club thing.

take innernet rumour, write it up into an article, take last summers rumoured transfer fee and knock a third off as there are only two more Windows that we can realistically charge a fee and bingo, Fonte is fucking off for £5m.

Defensively weak team, that has their only capable defender out injured. A chance of a good season fighting for the title if they can stop conceding so many goals.

That’s a better shout than anything else I’ve seen, although I’m guessing that people are thinking big European club. Is he actually cup-tied for any of this? He’s been on the bench but hasn’t played.

Not sure how it works. I thought if you were named in the squad for Europe, you were cup tied. If so, Liverpool or Everton should be favourites. Then again i don’t suppose man u give a shit about the Europa.
I think i might cry if Virgil goes to Liverpool. Surely he will eventually leave for a truly big team. I do not want him to join any other PL team, but Liverpool would be my nightmare scenario.

The latest rumour is that he was offered 80k a week pay rise but turned it down because he wanted an extension as well.Cant think that if that was true anyone would better that for a 33 year old who’s best days are behind him.
With Bolassie out for the season (29k wasted) Everton have more important matters to address than upping the combined age of their central defenders to 101 years. I can see Everton being dragged in to a relegation scrap in the new year.Cant think Jose would enjoy that.

VVD is different to other players we have signed.
He was on the open market for a frigging year and everyone had the opportunity to beat us to his signature, it was the worst kept transfer secret of all-time.
So how come we spotted the potential and others didn’t?
If VVD and Fonte goes (how much wages will clubs pay as Everton wont pay top for him) who does that leave us with?
