Fonte Off?

So just a 50% rise then?

So not as good as the pay increase we offered unless he gets an extra year. The question is could they continue to pay him when they are in the Championship?

Jose’s agent will have told him what he thinks he could be earning. Les Reed will know what the club are prepared to pay him. Last year it seems that Jose and the club were in accord as he signed a new contract. This year we can only assume that his agent is using the fact that he played for the winning team in the European Cup that he is worth much more. Doesnt really mean anything to SFC in terms of performance on the pitch though does it, as nice as it is to have a cup winner on board. It looks like the decision has been made and it is good to see that the club aren’t going to be fucked around by an agent.I will be sorry to see Jose go, but I would be more sorry to get stuck with a very expensive bench warmer in years to come.

A year ago he was offered a new contract that would keep him at the club until he is 35. Thank you very much said Jose…very happy to sign. Good lad…end of story. :lou_lol:

Oddly some fans seem to think we need to reward his loyalty every year by offering him another improved contact. :lou_facepalm_2:

I can’t wait for the explanation behind this.

Saints management dont like the players mouthing off in public and you can see why. Fonte is making out he is being hard done by when he was happy to sign a new contract last year and has been offered more money since. I wish I was being that hard done by!

Yeah that’s what I made of it. Easy to recognise that very few players of Fonte’s vintage get offered extensions past the age of 35. I’d like to think he’s just responding to media accusations (rather than having a direct dig at SFC) that he has refused to sign a new deal, but then again he is playing up to it a bit.

I don’t think anyone has done anything wrong. Fonte is under contract, until the end of next season, he was offered a new contact, which the club felt was suitable, Fonte did not think it was suitable. He is still a Saints player, who is very professional and a great defender for us, no matter what some say on here. 100% commitment and our captain, who has been with us since league 1.

He might go, he might not, but I think it will be in the summer, but at 34 (or closer to 34), he would struggle to get signed by a bigger club and be near the end for us. I do think he wants to stay, but wants another year or 2 extension as well as a little more money, but this would take him to the age of 37, and I feel that would be it, free agent or retire.

The club are playing it sensibly and Fonte is just after the last pay day and security for him and family, before the end and retirement from playing.

He’s a victim of late international success.

I’m one of the best in Europe, I should be paid more!

Yes Jose, but you’re an old bloke so you can’t have a long contract.

He’s been excellent for us, but he’s getting on a bit and VVD needs to be promoted to captain to try an entice him to stay for another year (maybe 2 if we’re really lucky). Jose wants a last pay day and who can blame him. I just hope the black box has found a decent replacement.

Claude now seems to be saying that there are no plans to sell Jose in January so probably best that he says thank you to the pay rise and sucks it up.

Other than the goal, Jose produced the other great moment - near the end, when he slid in, took the ball, kept it in, and won a throw.

A little moment of class.

Reading the comments on the Everton fans forums (GOTeam) many of them are unhappy with Koeman and predictions as to how long he will be there vary from January to end of next season. Some are concerned it would be too expensive to sack him and a lot of them are questioning if the £100 million transfer budget exists. A lot of them are offering advice on who to buy in the window. Morgan and Depay from United are popular choices.A few are touting VVD (no mention of Fonte)altough most think that it would not happen as Saints would not sell and that he could do much better than Everton. Most of them seem to agree with Koeman that the team are crap and that they have not progressed since they sacked Martinez.

I see Man U are looking to sign a Portuguese centre back next month and it is not Fonte.

Someone called Lindelof from Benfica who is 11 years younger than Jose.

Was just reading that thread today, cheered me up no end :lou_smiley:

The Telegraph - one of the few papers I trust for Saints news - has said that we will listern to offers for Jose in January.

Jose is gently working himself out of the team, ably assisted by his agent.

He appears to want a longer contract, but Yoshida has stepped up.

So Jose is left holding a two, a three and Mr Bun the Baker.

Don’t take up poker Jose, but if you do leave, please retain your legendary status by behaving sensibly.

Spot on.

Meh… his only problem is his heads already left, but he has no idea where it is
