To give credit where itās due, i think Puel has handled this whole Fonte saga in a very professional way in his interviews with the media. Canāt have been easy with all he has on his plate.
It has been reported that we offered Fonte a one yeaar extension and a pay increase to put him on 80 grand a week. If this is true it seems bizarre, to say the least, that he would go to West Ham for 65 grand. Perhaps his new super agent led him to believe that Man U and Liverpool would be in for him. I have no doubt at all that when Fonte handed in a transfer request, and had his little outburst in the press, he envisaged ending up at that soul less stadium in East London.
None of this detracts though from the fact that he has been a wonderful servant to The Saints, a major factor in our success for the past seven years. He should always receive nothing but respect for this, booing him would surely be disgraceful. We are not Portsmouth supporters!
As someone said on one of the links on the other thread, he came back from the Euros to a heroās welcome, everyone was so pleased for him, but it was soon clear that something had changed. Changed his agent, now with so called āsuper agentā, Jorge Mendes, then the stories in the press linking him with Man U, Liverpool etc. It is sure as hell Southampton FC didnāt start those rumours. Given his statements last season, saying how happy he was here, how proud he was to be captain etc, most supporters assumed he would end his playing career here, would have a testimonial and unquestioned ālegendary statusā. It would appear he has thrown this away, allowing an agent to lead him up the garden path in order to feather his own nest. To end up at West Ham! Really sad.

Like every one I was chuffed to see him and Cedric win the Euro Championship.Is it not funny that Cedric came back as Cedric with the same attitude as last season but Fonte morphed into Billy big bollocks and has been a pain in the bum since the day he came back to a heroās welcome.
It is obvious from all that has been said that Jose has been sold down the river by his not so super agent who seems to have unsettled him by making him believe that a big money move to a bigger club was a formality.
He looks to have turned down offers from the club better than he is going to end up with at Wet Spam. His agent is the only one to gain from this. Pride and humiliation will prevent Jose from withdrawing his transfer request and staying.A very sad way for it all to end.

Strangely another source had him as agreeing terms with WBA (in principle) but waiting for WHU to evolve.
Yes they are well known for throwning money around when it comes to players, but older players as well. Come on a 4 year deal for a 33 year old, that is what Fonte wanted, he would have been out of contract here next summer, then really would have struggled to find somewhere. I am not complaining, as we would be silly to offer longer terms.
As mentioned earlier, great deal for us and Fonte, but his heart will not be in West Ham, just the pay packet, will be what made him move there.
Now Palace, I could understand, but they would not have been able to offer anywhere near as much as the Hammers.

I wonder if Jack Schitt and his āfriendā will come out of retirement now that the club is in need of some good PRā¦ deliver the club friendly āinside scoopā on the whole affair.
Otherwise we will have to see what the club writes in the āobituaryā on the official site. Will it be more akin to Rickie Lambertās full page spread or Adam Lallanaās two lines?

I agree. It did sound very wishy washy and non commital at the time but I guess they were simply struggling to say āhe is being a little bitchā in another friendlier way.
According to the Torygraph heās currently finalising term on a contract at Wet Spam until 2019
