I have to say I’ve got a soft spot for Mick McCarthy, he always comes across as a good lad who enjoys a cold beverage. A favourite memory is during the Euros around 20 years ago now when they were held in Holland, Mick was one of the pundits on the BBC coverage. After the final was played the BBC had all the pundits and commentators seated round a table with, I think Gary Lineker in the chair. He went round the table asking each one in turn what was their stand out moment from the tournament, with the predictable answers, free kicks, goal saving tackles etc. When it came to Ray Stubbs’ turn he said his stand out moment was going for a nice meal in a posh restaurant with Mick McCarthy and then on to a party they had been invited to in a very swish house on the outskirts of Amsterdam. In the early hours of the next morning a taxi was called to take the two of them back to the city, Mick collapsed in the front seat of the cab and told the driver that he couldn’t remember the name of their hotel but it was near a canal! The whole studio was in uproar, slapping their thighs and biting the carpet, with poor old Mick sitting there with his head in his hands. A magic moment.
