Phil May, singer with The Pretty Things has passed away aged 75, not Corona related.
The Pretty Things were a fucking good band, S F Sorrow is a masterpiece, the inspiration for The Who’s Tommy. RIP.
40 years ago yesterday on the 18th of May 1980, Ian Curtis died, after committing to vinyl possibly the bleakest, most poignant collection of songs ever to be written. I defy anyone to listen to Closer without understanding at least something of the mental anguish he must have been feeling.
Yep…tragic. If you missed it rerun Radcliffe & Maconie with Peter Hook from last Sunday…runs from 1hr 31 minutes onwards: Peter Hook from 1:32:00 He’s such an open and candid interviewee.
In more recent time, it reminded me a lot of the similar health issues suffered by Scott Hutchison of Frighted Rabbit… who took his own life aged 26… although some of the music was less bleak, some haunting lyrics about life’s social issues and personal challenges … teh third track below, gets me every time (He drowned himself in the River Forth)
Jimmy Cobb, jazz drummer who played on (among many other things) Miles Davis’ quintessential Kind of Blue LP, has died at the age of 91. He was the last member of that ensemble to die, and I reckon you could safely say that 91 is one hell of an age to reach for a jazz musician of that era.
RIP Steve Priest Bass player & founder of The Sweet.
1st band to “horrify” my Mum and while cringeworthy at the time did produce some great hits that have stood the test of time
By cringeworthy I meant you could never admit to liking them at School! #uncool
I can’t find any reference on this thread, but Andy Gill died in February. Guitarist and founder member of one of my all time favourite bands, Gang of Four, my spine still tingles when I hear the Damaged Goods EP.
