Guitarist extraordinaire Tony McPhee, the lead guitarist from the three piece blues/rock band The Groundhogs has passed aged 79. Tony was a superb player, known as the English Rory Gallagher which is high praise indeed. I saw the band on a couple of occasions back in the early 1970s at Tofts blues club in Folkestone, which was probably during the height of their fame, they had a couple of very successful albums, ‘Thank Christ For The Bomb’, and ‘Split’,(which was superb and went gold), they were a superb live act. After they broke up Tony played with blues legends like John Lee Hooker, Little Walter and Jimmy Reed to name a few. In the late 90s I went with my son to see Caravan at the Lyceum in London on their reunion tour, and lo and behold the support act was a reformed Groundhogs which put the icing on the cake.
RIP Tony McPhee, you were the real deal.

I’m sorry to hear that, great player. I saw him close up (I was in the front row) when they were backing John Lee Hooker at The Concorde in Burgess Road.

I happened upon this earlier today, from 1968…

Astrud Gilberto has passed away, aged 83. The face of Bossa Nova, and the voice of the best known version of Girl From Ipanema.

The Getz/Gilberto album is one of my all time favourite albums to listen to in the summer months.

I don’t suppose you saw the Stan Getz tribute evening at the Concorde last year? Really excellent group.

No, sadly I missed that.

I used to go every Thursday evening as that was “Blues Night”…that evening on Thursday 8th August 1968 was the first appearance of “Taste” at The Concorde. I got there about 7.30 and there were half a dozen others. My mate (who sits next to me at St Marys) arrived before the off and there were about 30 by the end of the first set. Rory was fuckin’ sensational, couldn’t believe it. The next time they appeared about 6 weeks later the place was packed as were their dozen or so subsequent appearances.

So farewell then Silvio Berlusconi who has passed away aged 86. Perhaps an appropriate time to give this another airing, possibly the greatest question asked of a politician by a journalist.

harsh but fair

Quite how he managed to stay out of jail will be one of life’s mysteries

Ummm Money lots of money.

And favours owed

Dignified to the end. :+1::+1:
