Graeme Edge of The Moody Blues has passed away today, aged 80.
Saw them at Soton Uni about 1968. They didn’t do encours as it took 10 minutes to rewind their Mellotron.

Listened to some bloke from a SA online news rag being interviewed by R4 last night. Gave De Klerk right pelters about being an opportunist racist etc etc. laid right into him. I think it was OK because the interviewee was white…
Even so, to be the guy that paved the way to the modern South Africa would have gotten him lynched by some quarters at the time.
I don’t know much about him apart from that.
He saw the writing on the wall, but unlike his predecessors he took the time to read it. He really had little or no option, but he managed the transition pretty much as well as anyone could have done. I’d agree that it took personal courage to do what he did.
I think where his image is massively tarnished is in the long time he spent as part of the vile PW Botha’s government, during which all manner of barbarities and atrocities were committed by the forces of the South African state. Put simply, it’s not credible to think that de Klerk simply didn’t know about those.
Incidentally, PW Botha, for all his vileness, is a great piece of rhyming slang, as in:
“I’ve just got myself a new PW.”
“Oh yeah? What is it?”
“Jag XE.”
