In a similar vein, I absolutely hate and detest U2. Well, who wouldn’t? But, in the mighty hands of the late Man in Black, even a U2 song can sound magnificent. Some feat.

Massive apologies for perverting the thread here, but here are a couple of (relatively) little known original versions of songs that have been covered many times.

First, Sammi Smith. She was big mates with the “Outlaw” country singers such as Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson, who wrote this and let her record it before he did.

Second, PP Arnold, who bought this song from a then unknown chap called Steven Demetre Georgiou, who never achieved fame using that name. Arnold paid £30 for the song (a fair bit in 1967), and cut what is surely the definitive version.

No bells, whistles or smartass reinventions, just puts her heart into it…
