Not really- this is common sense … always think of context. About 1bn get flu each year globally with between 290000 and 700000 deaths… yet we still have patents letting their kids just cough in public without covering…

1700 children die every day from preventable disease… it’s only because it’s affecting us in ten developed west that anyone is giving any fucks. It’s most likely no more deadly than flu, but easier to transmit if you don’t wash your hands…

Context is all. Every day up to 25,000 people die from hunger. Which adds up to just over 9 million people who die of starvation every year. While a goodly proportion of the rest of the world are grossly overweight and on a diet… Where are the calls for action from world bodies? Compare this to the current coronavirus ā€˜crisis’, where it would appear there is mass worldwide panic after a few deaths, co-ordinated actions put in place to bring it under control by governments around the world. Because viruses like this current one are indiscriminate, Prince or pauper, all are vulnerable to it. Can’t buy your way out of this one no matter how much you have or how powerful you may be. Amazing, (and amusing) to observe how this sudden rude awakening is starting to concentrate minds. Some of the 9 million who are on their way to dying of hunger this year could be forgiven for wondering what the fuss is all about!

That argument is sound.
But Coronavirus has a couple of key differences to Flu.

  1. It appears to be far more rapid in transmission.
  2. It appears to cause severe respiratory distress in many more patients than Flu.

Not so many potential deaths but a far higher burden on health services more patients will need Oxygen for example.

Every bed taken by Coronavirus could mean a cancer victim dying instead

What you don’t want is your local doctors and nurses getting it.

Could go in one of many threads. Trump didn’t know Flu kills people

That’s the rub. I saw some worst case predictions somewhere that said about 25% of people could get it. Mortality rate is between 1% and 4%. In a city like Southampton that could mean over 64,000 cases with a good number of those being hospitalised. That could lead to about 2,000 extra deaths, all in the space of a few months (say). There’s no way an already over extended NHS could cope with that and a lot of elderly and infirm people could lose their lives. :worried:

And a number of us on here are elderly and very infirm on Friday nights

Add to that the queue for burial services…

A few ā€œbefore and afterā€ pictures:

Tell me about it.
No work this week. Nothing.
1st cases reported in Krakow today & Malta Sunday (our main source of visitors).
Maybe I could do a mail order service to you lot #villagestore

Meanwhile. What a plonker. Goes ā€œgently agitatedā€ buying & forgets own bags.

Update.
16 cases now.
Screening at all borders airports & stations all indoor events to be cancelled where possible.
Security staff at local airport up in arms no gloves or masks available.
32 cases in Czech Republic

We were at The General on Thursday for a Neuro appointment…still dodging bullets.

And yet flights still arriving daily from Italy with no checks at our airports. Our government’s response so far seems to be telling people over and over again to wash their hands. That’s it. Despite warnings from Italy that the UK are now where Italy was two weeks ago. It’s almost as if the government want the virus to take hold and start killing the elderly off. Think of the millions saved on pension payments and all those hospital beds freed up!
