Utter bollocks. Hardly anybody pays cash nowadays, Iâve been self employed practically my entire working life and I donât recall cash ever making up more than about 10% of my takings. These days itâs so rare to even be offered cash that I genuinely donât remember when it last happened, everyone that doesnât get a monthly invoice either pays by card or bacs. Even when I did get a small amount of cash in the takings it would never have been worth the effort of losing it out of the accounts, HMRC have always had access to work diaries if they choose.
So what are we meant to do if the government wonât help out? Theyâre helping everyone else with most of their wages, as I understand it that isnât even means tested, so they could have a fortune in the bank and still be getting assistance. Itâs all very well to be told âstay at homeâ, but as goat said, no work = no money to live on. Like always.
Which are you going to use then? And will you ask for a VAT receipt?
I canât talk for builders, or anyone else for that matter, only my own experience. If a builder is prepared to bilk the system out of 10k in VAT they deserve to be dibbed in and done for it.
Thatâs another point as well. The builders could well be prepared to knock off the vat, but that ends up with the customer paying less, not the builder earning more. Imho, the customer is equally culpable in the fraud if he takes them up on it, he must know why the builder is dropping the price for cash.
If you know theyâre good, some couple opposite me have a done a bit of both as they been there for 4 months, shaved ÂŁ30 grand off so I am told, that was a huge job mind.
What I am saying is most brickies, scaffolders etc etc whoâre out on their own subbying it etc etc will get about a packet of benson and a pint of carling on legit claims.
Iâm in a difficult position now.
Most of my work is as a freelance, I have the southern franchise to teargas members of the public on behalf of local government, mainly for bin violations or dog fouling.
Theyâve asked me to be on call this week, but if I go in I could face sanctions of some sort.
Itâs all a bit confusing, especially as they have also decided they no longer recognise BACS and only want to pay cash-in-hand, like Iâm a window cleaner from 1970.
Absolutely right. When the dust settles on this crisis one thing you can be sure of, it wonât be the governmentâ fault, none of them will accept any responsibility for political decisions they made which has resulted in the shit show which is happening before our eyes like a slow motion car crash. Johnson and his cabinet of none of the talents will all develop herd immunity.
