:covid_19: 😷 šŸ„ Corona Virus the thread for all your fears ā“

From the Guardian.

Durham police today said they fined two people for travelling hundreds of miles from London to their area during the coronavirus lockdown.

The news comes as a fresh statement from Durham police is expected as soon as today, following their examination of claims of sightings of Dominic Cummings in the Durham area, and whether lockdown rules had been broken.

So the meat of the saga - I.e. the self isolating in Durham - no case to answer

The daft eye test - minor breach - no further action

Well that was worth a weeks worth of headlines

It is worth it because what’s it’s done is highlight two important things:

  1. No matter what the government say, there is confusion over the guidance
  2. The senior advisor to the govt willfully broke rules that he himself devised (however minor) and that sets a very poor example to others

Actually, Durham police are saying it ā€œmight have been a minor breachā€ so no certainty on that point either.

BTW I get the example set and I personally think the second trip was ropey at best but the furore has been greatly amplified because a lot of people have an axe to grind and went for it.

It reminds me a bit of when the media et al were going after Corbyn on every point they could dig up - that didn’t work then either

Oh and
3. The whole debacle has highlighted that Johnson doesn’t really have control of the govt. What was his quote yesterday about being told he’s not allowed to share certain information or dates? He’s not really in charge and this has brought to the fore some of the impatience some of the party has for him

Football back in June, according to the Sun pubs open in July. The virus has disappeared, its a miracle. All hail our mighty leader and his puppet master for their foresight and general all round brilliance, setting good examples and leading from the front. Surely only a cynic would suggest that two extremely overfed dead cats have been flung on the table to get those damaging headlines off the front pages. Following the science eh!

@Fatso will be pleased.

Would have preferred if I’d have got the food and cats just flung on the table.

Experts should be listened to. Bad decision making has given us the worst deaths per pop figure in the world.

Not according to this we don’t

Belgium and Spain (plus San marino and Andorra) are worse

I don’t know which if those is most accurate. What I’m certain of is that even third place is a disgrace and didn’t change the fact that experts are critical of the govt response.

Experts were critical a month before you locked down, let’s not forget that.

I’ve been with a few birds where that might have actually been preferable.

Christ, when I look back over the years and think of some of the rubbish I’ve consorted with… :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

All this follow the science bollocks , repeated as a mantra for the past three months is just that, bollocks. They don’t follow ā€˜the science’, they follow ā€˜some science’. They pay lip service to it when it suits their narrative and ignore it when it doesn’t. Far more scientists-epidemiologists have disagreed with the governments interpretation of the science they claim to be following than have agreed with it, consistently for the past three months. Just look at the shenanigans at the moment. Three weeks ago Johnson addressed the nation and announced out of the blue that ā€˜Stay Home’, which everybody understood , was being replaced with ā€˜Stay Alert’, which nobody did. He also announced that people could now drive as far as they liked for exercise. These changes came as much as a surprise to the tame scientists, ( Whitty and Vallance), as they did to everybody else. They have confirmed that they weren’t consulted. About four weeks ago The Guardian and Mirror newspapers were in a dialogue with Downing Street about Cumming’s whereabouts during his lockdown, after he and his wife were supposedly infected with the virus. Asking for a comment on allegations that they were in Durham not London as claimed by Mrs Cummings in her heartstring tugging account in The Spectator of their Corona virus hell. Also asking for a comment on reported sightings of them in Barnard Castle Up until five days ago Downing St were rubbishing reports that they were ever in Barnard Castle, dismissing it as ā€˜fake news’.
It is blindingly obvious that the changes announced by Johnson had absolutely nothing to do with ā€˜following the science’, they were made to try and protect Cummings from what they knew was coming. The politicians know it, the scientists know it, the journalists know it, anyone with a functioning brain knows it. The exceptional circumstances loophole Cummings exploited, roundly supported by his desperate cheerleaders was specifically
added to protect victims of domestic abuse during lockdown. These people are lower than a snake’s fucking belly, there are no depths to which they won’t stoop to protect their elite status.
Going into the next stage of opening things up, who, apart from those who are invested in this Tory government and are desperate to believe the lies of these people, and the terminally naive could possibly trust Johnson and his cohorts to do the right things going forward, for the right reasons? Trust anything they say? Some people should have a long hard look in the mirror and give their head a wobble.
