Everyone is wearing a mask - which weāre told does no good. I think. Or was that the advice when we didnāt have enough masks?
That was the advice when science said so and also said no need to quarantine/test travellers.
Just love to know what science intern knew more about the Virus than 90% of the planetās Governments.
Oh yeah.
You didnāt need masks as it would stop you drinking Clorox/Dettol
Our hapless Health Secretary promised last month that 18,000 contact tracers would be employed, trained up and in place by mid May. As of this morning he has managed 1,500. Lifting the lockdown without a tracing and testing system in place is crazy, criminal negligence at the very least.
When we didnāt have enough - the last thing we needed was corporates competing with the NHS to buy up supplies
May are ask what has caused your slight obsession with interns as they crop up in a number of your posts?
I would argue that there is no way that is at all conceivable that any intern is involved in any strategic decision of such magnitude in this or in policy or business case
Also āscienceā is perhaps not what many folks think it is. It is the wrong word to use in this case.
What we are talking about is āadviceā based on the best possible clinical and scientific understanding of the available evidence.
It remains pretty well established that a mask will not likely prevent the wearer from being infected - unless you are a health care worker in close proximity to infected - and even then itās not great, they need full head protection and respiratory filters.
It may reduce the risk of your spittle infecting others but only in combination with good hygiene hand washing etc⦠so not sure what science is getting wrong really?
Wearing a mask wonāt do any harm - unless it diverts supply from those front line workers, or makes people casual about other measures or means some numpties with mild symptoms go out thinking itās safe to do so because they are wearing oneā¦
Oh, Iām with you. They we needed to protect stocks.
But was it really the last thing we needed (to rob the NHS of masks)?
Because to me, the very last thing we need is for the public to believe that masks donāt protect you - which Iād argue is the belief created by this government.
Iād also argue that the pictures of VE Day celebration attendees maintaining dubious social distancing are more concerning than the picture you posted of āWuhanā where everyone is apart from each other and wearing masks.
We like to mock Johnny foreigner here. I think Asia can teach us a lot about containing airborne viruses.
Sorry, but message should be even clearer⦠Mask wont protect the wearer - they may offere some reduction in odds IF you come across infected folks in close proximity but washing hands and social distancing is Still the best way to avoid infection⦠I suggest masks will see many going out with mild symptoms, or becoming complacent about washing hands or touching surfaces etc.
Meanwhile the great British public gets its sportā¦
āLast thingā was a figure of speech - meant nothing other than that
Its disgraceful @saintbletch that they doctored that photo - not only have they denied the little girl on the extreme right her image rights, they have altered the colour of the little boyās jumper just for the headline⦠that is what you meant isnāt it?

- To flatten the curve the # of infections needs to drop.
When intuvmbating a patient to place on a Ventilator a major aerosol release (spray) when the throat is cut. Hence the need for PPE. In that scenario it is for protection from the spray.
Apart from the UK, nowhere else is under the impression that wearing a mask provides protection to the wearer.
There is research that reducing the Viral load at exposure can buy time for the immune system to build up its response vs an aerosol burst when it pretty much overload.
A 5% reduction in viral load COULD reduce the impact n the immune system.
However, the RWASON everyone swears masks is that ON THE EVENT OF a cough or a sneeze the spray volume & distance is reduced.
In some cases by up to 80%. (You lot believe coughing into your sleeve works unfortunately not everyone does that nor catches it in time.
So this tiresome selfish it doesnāt protect me is missing the point.
It HELPS to protect Others.
A simple graphic example.
And Nations that enforced mask wearing are NOT clear of the Virus. They are have simply been able to start easing lockdown a month before other countries.
Oh dear. Incompetence or something more sinister?
Union warns care workers not to use UK government Covid-19 app
This increase in R0 is not associated with the relaxation of the lockdown rules. Itās too soon for that.
Fuck it, letās open the schools and get everyone back to work
First up⦠I have acknowledged it helps protect from spreading to others⦠no one is doubtingā¦
But you you also need to be careful about association between countries with masks and easing of lockdown⦠those countries have mostly initiated very early and strong tracing and were quicker and better at closing borders⦠simple associations are not evidence.
Sorry to sound like a stuck record and fucking smart arse⦠but assessment of clinical and scientific evidence is part of my job of last 25 years, so its in the blood so to speak.

Posted that this morning Goat.
In other news, looks like nothing went wrong in care homes.
We (us) got it wrong they (government) put a protective ring around care homes from the start.
