Career advice

I’m not really annoyed at all, I’m perplexed and I think this says more about the way you are than me clarifying.

I would guess that next to no-one on here purchased a house in cold, hard, cash at the age of 25 or 26, especially in this day and age.

Why would I mention those things straight off, I wasn’t even sure you’d be interested for a start. My point was they are the same generation and she owns a place, and two cars, which you were aghast at the suggestion that someone of your generation owning.

I am well aware of my argument, the issue is that there is always an excuse, always a reason, and even though we can prove that’s not an issue, you don’t seem to be willing to move from your staunch views.

I don’t have a real problem with you, but you do seem very, very young, immature and inflexible for someone of your age.

Alright. Well that does seem to be the main charge coming my way from the thread. Perhaps there’s some value in me moving out and just getting on with it more-or-less for the sake of it + the life experience.

I think I could answer that…

After 29 long pages of this behemoth, I’d imagine that anyone seeking a career is now reconsidering.

Even if they’re mad enough to continue, they might consult different sources of advice.

I’m thinking of quitting my job and going to l ive self-sustainably in the country.

Good call

I still would, (I know, I know, she wouldn’t …)

I bet she still has a nice arse

Does she own them outright or are they on HP? Or leased?

Does she pay for her tax and insurance upfront or by monthly direct debit.

FFS Cherts. I’m trying to have a wank and you’re not filling in the detail.

I think you should take Tramps on as an apprentice.

Tramps, you’d be up for that, right?

If he can get blood out of upholstery I’ve got room for him.

So, that went decently enough I’d say. Can’t promise that I’ve got the job but I’ve got no regrets. We went through some of my grades from uni which was a bit of an awkward spot as I re-did a year due to a medical condition (or, rather, I was mis-prescribed Zopiclone) and the withdrawal effects massively fucked me up after I came off the course - but that’s another story.

A lot of people must be wondering why I keep coming back here as I probably sound like an absolute sucker for punishment, but the general advice of “Asking to defer to September because you’re choosy about the location is fucking dreadful whatever you do don’t do it” is the kind of useful, actionable shit that its good to know, so I took it.

So, when matey asked me (very very openly and non-judgementally - or so it seemed) about “what my priority would be - would it be the location or to start as soon as possible?” I said that I was keen to get cracking and I’d be happy with St. Albans.

If I get the job for a Jan start in St. Albans, I’ll never know if I *could* have got the Sept start in London but I guess you guys are right in that it would be a massive turn-off from their point of view. So I went for it with full gusto. At least if I do fail I won’t be left wondering if I did everything right *except* asking for the deferrment & different location - and will know I do have shit to work on.

Nothing wrong with that, but the point is that I’m getting different advice from different people - so its pretty hard to follow it all to the letter when much of it contradicts each other. Quite a few people have told me that I ought to completely reconsider the career path I’m choosing so its pretty hard to match that up with the others telling me to grab at the first job I can!

And of course, this range of advice extends into real life too. A mate of mine yesterday told me to tell them up front that I couldn’t do St. Albans, dad was more like “well, take it and see if you can ask for a transfer”, ex-gf that I’m still in touch with said there’s no point even going for it if its not the job you really want. @You-guys-on-here-generally-reacted-with-exasperation-that-I-would-even-try-and-swing-it-to-a-different-location-and-generally-implied-that-I-should-be-grabbing-the-job-with-both-hands.

I have empathised more than many, and sent you detailed insight by PM into one of the BIg 4 processes. I have to say that throughout this thread you have mainly (not exclusively) given the impression that you are very very keen to start a career (in accountancy) and more than that, you wanted to have the security of income, and all that brings you in terms of housing, social life, planning a future, etc etc.

Nothing wrong in any of that. But thats why so many are exasperated - me now included. You seem like you are about to be offered a position, and its in St Albans. Not St Neots, or St Johnstone, but St Albans, Hertfordshire, just outside London. Your issue was the commute and the rent but 30 seconds thought would tell you that you dont have to live in St Albans to work there and it has decent commuter links to lots of places. If you really want a job as much as you have regularly implied, then of course you should grab it. If not, what is this thread of yours all about?

I think I could answer that…

lol no shit dummy. Its me asking for careers advice to apply to my own life - obviously its about me. Its one thread on a forum.

Do you know what I’d do if there was a thread on fly-fishing, Italian opera, Rugby Union or some shit I wasn’t interested in?

I wouldn’t click on it.

You’ll keep reading though. Bet you a pound

(Just for 100% clarification, that’s all at Ostrich & Cholula, not at you Bucks - you’ve been awesome)

Update.

Sadly, I failed the partner interview for Kingston Smith. Apparently my answers weren’t concise enough.

It’s a bit of a tricky one as like I said, he brought up my poor grades and the fact I re-did a year a fair bit during the interview. Naturally I explained about the fact that I had to redo the year due to a medical condition but he was clearly a little worried, asking if this was ‘still a problem now’ and so on. Obviously if they decided against hiring me on that basis then it wouldn’t be something they’d say in the feedback, so its difficult to know how much of that was my fault. I’m also unable to know whether it was a case of them still having several applicants for the position and going with a ‘safer’ option, or if I really did come off badly to the point where I was just a complete no-no.

Nevertheless, I’ll take his point on board and try and improve the length of my answers in future. I am a little unsure where I’m going wrong though - as like I say, I’ve passed every single phone/video interview since I started posting here so it does seem to be an issue thats unique to the face-to-face part. I may well invest in some interview coaching moving forward.

I suppose one clue lies in the fact that when I went on the first date with my girlfriend, she said I came off as really nervous (this used to be a source of banter but she was dead serious!) yet at the time I honestly didn’t feel like I did too bad a job of hiding my nerves and thought I’d covered them up pretty well! so I guess it goes to show that you can’t always be sure about these things.

Maybe I just need a female interviewer I can charm!

No denying I’m disappointed. I’ve gotta hold my hand up on that one. I honestly thought I’d done enough to get the job.

I like to be fairly pessimistic (expect nothing/get nothing/pessimist never disappointed etc.) but its a bit of an England/Iceland defeat where there’s just no escaping the fact that you obviously expected to get a result.

Anyway, got a fair few apps where I’m still alive so I’ll do my best to press on.

EY: Phone interview on Wednesday 7th

National Audit Office: Phone interview Weds 14th

Lloyds: AC on the 15th

RSM: Have passed all the stages up until the AC but apparently they’re very crowded so I haven’t been given an AC date.

BDO: Still waiting to be put through to the video interview

HMRC tax: Waiting for test results - didn’t think I did a great job of those though. They were weirdly short as well (like 7 questions for numerical/verbal).

Nationwide: Through to AC - will hear about that around January or so apparently.

Just had the phone interview for EY. That was much tougher than I expected! I researched all the questions online so prepped a ‘soft script’ for each answer but many of them were ever-so-slightly different (but different enough to nullify the preparation).

Basically there are two types of phone interviews, competency-based interviews (with ‘Tell-me-about-a-time-when…’) and strengths-based interviews with hypothetical questions (so for example; ‘how would you ensure that you consider information from a variety of sources?’). Trouble with the latter is that you’re not allowed to ask for clarification or specificity; the questions are deliberately vague and it’s all down to your interpretation. This was the latter.

Still, I think it went as well as it could. I spent all day writing a tonne of answers and doing loads of research so I’ve done all I can. I like to think I’m on the happy side of a coinflip but I guess it largely depends on how much of a ‘filter’ the phone interview is for EY and how many they’re planning to cut out at this stage.

Had my first interview in nine years last night. Was expecting it to be a telephone interview. ms pap was thrilled “He’ll get to wow them with his wit and intellect without them seeing his hair or beard”.

T’was a fucking videoconference and I looked a scruffy bastard.

They’re either impressed or desperate. Second interview Tuesday, on-site. Should be fine. Interviews are only really there to determine two things.

  1. Is this bastard a blagger?
  2. Can I work with this bastard?

Ha! Nice one pal. Who’s it for?

Career advice; keep some things under your hat. You don’t know who’s looking. Looks promising though, and structurally, very similar to the setup I’m in. US firm with satellites in the UK.

If I get it, I’ll probably end up missing some Saints home games.

Hammering away preparing for my lousy Lloyds assessment day this Thursday. Don’t think I’ve got much of a prayer but obviously can’t give it any less than my best. Also have my National Audit Office phone interview on Wednesday so have fit in some prep for that as well.

Passed the phone interview for EY though and (I think) I did well enough in the BDO video interview so fingers crossed I’ll have those lined up for January.

Reading some of this makes me feel tired. Glad I gave up on any kind of career a long time ago. And thank God for the huge inheritance received.
