To be fair, it isn’t a new thing, manufacturing companies have been moving to Eastern Europe because of lower costs for years. That’s purely to chase profit.
Brexit is likely to accelerate it. I suspect (I admit I don’t know) that the range / type of organisations moving will widen again to chase profit because they’d rather have no restraint on EU trade and markets.
Whatever, I still struggle to see anything positive in Brexit. No matter how people try to intellectualise the debate It seems more and more like the UK took an advisory vote and like a petulant child has refused to properly look at the potential consequences.
It seems buzz phrases like Curbing immigration, taking back control, sovereignty, saving the NHS. easy deals with WTO etc etc are bandied about so often that mug punters believe everything will be fine even when you have mealy mouthed politicians like JRM saying everything will be back to normal in 50 years. Wtf?!!
Really are we that stupid? It appears so…remember this?
Any company with mass production in the UK with a World brand and are also based elsewhere in the EU were high fiving and necking champagne in June 16, what a perfect reason to leave, blame Brexit but they we’re going to do this anyway in 20 years, just keep a skeleton HQ in London (that doesn’t happen now does it?) and move East where labour is cheap, argh the EU dream.
The UK is high cost for companies, would you base yourself here when you can have a highly skilled, motivated workforce half price elsewhere?
No.
Big business uses brand “Made in England” “Made in UK” and syphons of work left, right and centre.
While not exactly booming, the UK grew faster than the eurozone in the second quarter and is doing a lot better than the Treasury predicted before the EU referendum. There has been no collapse in house prices, no 500,000 increase in unemployment, no two-year recession.
Umm, I swear that before the Brexit vote the “experts” were predicting there would be house price crashes, mass unemployment etc. etc. etc. immediately there was a Yes result!!
By adding 7 hours to every trip it reduces the efficiency and number of trips that can be made - I am sure they only have a finite number of trucks and drivers.
Can you not acknowledge that just because he is a twat the point is very simple… he already has experience of what the 7 hours time in CH has on the efficiency and costs for his business which is always passed on to client (exhibitions always cost more for transport to CH), and is therefore concerned this same issue will happen when entering the EU Zone as well… which will be passed onto customers. The issue with this is that there comes a tipping point for customers where it becomes more cost effective to simply get an EU firm to run your EU exhibits and drop UK firms… I know this as we did the same in the US for that very reason… UK firms miss out and lose business… but fuck him because he is a 'twerp? What of those he employs? Or his UK based suppliers? He may be an utter cunt for all I care, but its the implications for workers that are the issue, not his pocket
But I’m pretty sure the pound has actually fallen sharply against all major currencies since the result of the referendum. So we shouldn’t be too smug.
My question is very simple… so if anyone out there has seen any good and robust data/estimates … The EU will want to continue trading with us, BUT how much of that 243bn, is goods they can get locally at a better price if even small tariffs are applied ? Or simply TIME/hassle goes up due to more red tape?
