Remember the EU Constitution?

Drafted in 2004. it was billed as an attempt to rid the EU of the Byzantine complexity that a series of cumulative treaty amendments had created.

As well as that, it was a statement about what the EU was, or wanted to be.

It is telling that in this document, the EU tried to enshrine the unelected executive of the EU, the Commission, as the only organ that could set policy.

It tells us that a mere fourteen years ago, the EU basically thought a de facto dictatorship was the way to go.

Before our Remainer friends complain about provocative language, let me explain what happened next.

The constitution was put before two countries to vote on in referendums, The Netherlands and France. Both electorates rejected it by a majority vote. So much for us being the only Eurosceptics.

The EU, spooked, dropped the plan. Instead, it used that horrible cumulative Byzantine treaty legislation again, and implemented the vast majority of that Constitution as the Lisbon Treaty, and imposed it on France, The Netherlands and the rest of the Union.

The Irish, unlike the supplicant Varadkar today, went against the EU. They had a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty, even voted against it, but effectively had to keep re-running it until they got it “right”.

Once that happened, the power of the EU Commission was effectively ratified. Since then, the EU has removed democratic governments in favour of finance friendly technocrats, and has been a key player in Greece’s perpetual state of national poverty.

Still, it’s fitting. An incredibly undemocratic organisation destroying the birthplace of democracy.

It’s almost as if the EU is trolling us.
