Not sure if that is a true reflection but if so it just paints a damning picture… issues such as asylum have fuck all do do with EU. We already have mechanisms in place that restrict access to services and welfare, if migrants are not paying in to the system. I appreciate that for some, as with me they have made a principled choice, but the reality is that the vote was won my the misinformed and ignorant…
Nope, just demonstrating my pattern recognition skills, which went down a lot better when Bazza was the pattern I recognised
Nowt personal intended. Occupational hazard.
Oh dear…
The Daily Mail’s witch hunt for university Remainers spectacularly backfires
Spare a thought for the Daily Mail. The government is now so outrageously agenda-driven that it’s nicking all of the paper’s limelight.
This week, the Tory whip Chris Heaton-Harris MP got in trouble for writing letters to universities asking for information and names regarding their Brexit teaching.
So the Mail, clearly envious of the attention, and maybe spooked by the Tories’ recent insistence on protecting “free speech” on campus, has decided to make its own McCarthyist move.
Entirely understandable.
For nigh-on decades now the poor and working-class have watched as the interests of the middle and upper classes have slowly but surely (by Prime Ministers, politicians and the press) be stealthily conflated with this ethereal concept called ‘THE ECONOMY’, and therefore elevated to a standard of mythical importance rather than the selfish desires they’re based on.
Low corporation tax is good for The Economy. High salaries for CEOs which ‘attract the brightest and best’ are good for The Economy. Uber, Deliveroo and the gig economy streamlining undercutting workers are good for The Economy.
What a coinkadink all these things benefit the wealthy at the expense of the poor?
May well be some truth in the ‘middle classes’ or lets call them the better paid having a concern over the economy, but its also a little disingenuous to ignore the 4 main isses that this ‘survey’ suggests brexiteers were concerned about; Making our own laws, number of immigrants , the cost of immigrats on the wlefare system (SMALL), and number claiming asylum (FUCK all to do with the EU…) now feel free to correct me here, but in all these cases there is a large element of ignorance… we already make our own laws and have successfully vetoed many the EU wanted to impose especially some on employee rights… interestingly we dont hear any shit about the EU making laws that no one disagrees with… the number of immigrants? … whatever some think we were not overrun, nor is the the supply and demand issue alone responsible for wage issues…(whatever simplistic view Papa may have on this subject its a ‘little more complicated’), cost to welfare? well the ignorant obviously dont understand we already have ability to restrict access to welfare to those who PAY in to the system through NI… and as mentioned above asylum has fuck all to do with EU. That is a choice we make as a nation.
So whilst its fair to accuse the ‘middle classes’ of self interest… what would you say we accuse those voting brexit of? ignorance, prjudices, little englanders? being a bit thick? as that is what that chart suggests… for every Pa going on aboout the undemocratic commission, benefits to UK economy(?) wages etc…there woudl appear to 10x the number ignorant folk who did not even check facts on the issues they felt were most imporant to them… and that dear folks is democracy in action
You have GOT to be joking?
May didn’t understand Article 50 and fucked up?
Too little, too late - the ‘story’ has been absorbed and distributed as fact by the hard of thinking.
The press complaints bodies need the power to issue massive fines for this kind of made-up shit and the damage it does.
They also ran an immigration story about violence in Sangat the day of the referendum… but the story and pictures were actually 10months old… and these are asylum seekers not EU immigrants , but as we see it seems that many Brexiteers could not differentiate betwen the two…
Telegraph been at it this week as well.
I’m sure it’s just pure coincidence that right-wing, pro-brexit papers have this habit of splashing non-white, often women on front pages with inflammatry headlines such as below, before meekly backtracking with some bullshit apology hidden away at half the size:
Student forces Cambridge to drop white authors
Why doesn’t the EU home them?
…The Germans took 900,000 syrian refugees…
The EU does. We are part of the EU.
Are you talking about Dublin regulation III? Lots of problems with that(which explains III). As far as ourselves being part of the EU, you need to remember that shared responsibility thing(you know a socialist kind of thinking. Maybe not your cup of tea).
The case was brought against the Council of the European Union’s decision to assist Italy and Greece in tackling the inflow of migrants in 2015.
That decision meant EU member states had to take in 120,000 people in clear need of international protection over two years. “That mechanism is actually a proportionate means of enabling Greece and Italy to deal with the impact of the 2015 migration crisis,” Advocate General Yves Bot’s statement read.
Like it or not, this is what our representatives acceded to on our behalf. Enjoy.
… another ‘myth’ spread by the anti-european press was that all theasylum seakers and migrants want to come here for a load of freebies… as with teh health tourists above… YES there is a larger number that do wnat to come her for one simplereason. Language. many morespeak English - its why France has many more migrants from its former French speaking colonies - languge helps you get a job, deal with the admin and bureaucracy … its ameans more wnat to come, but also that do, can work and pay into the system.
True the whole world over(mainly in our languages favour). The Indian dream is to get out and not once did i see a single none English language country ever mentioned(the adverts, billboards, talk on the subject are an absolute constant in life there). The same goes for any country that was touched by empire.
That’s an interesting observation, AG. Stands up as far as benefits are concerned, but it doesn’t really hold up overall. I don’t disagree on your point about language - that is a factor. Your point about coming here for free stuff doesn’t though.
Y’see, there’s a fair few of us Brits that move to different countries for free stuff. Why do you think people choose to work in the Arab States? Granted, some of those places are now hugely attractive places to live, but Brits have been taking jobs across the Arab world for decades.
It’s rarely down to a pre-existing experience or innate affinity with the place. It’s the fact that salaries are high and tax is virtually non-existent. Brits work in those countries to get free stuff, stuff that they couldn’t get back home, in this case money. A Polish worker gets 2.5x the minimum wage she will back home, a Romanian 4x their local wage while Bulgarians get 6x their minimum wage. And for all the talk about migrant contribution to society, we’re not getting income tax from these workers, because the Conservatives and Lib Dems have raised the tax threshold to take “the poorest people out of tax”. Perhaps, but a side effect is that someone from an economy where the pound still buys a fuckload gets to earn 12.K tax free.
Migrants absolutely come here for free stuff. We’re basically providing a Dubai for unskilled workers.
Free Stuff.
Dubai.
Brexiteer: hahahahah that will server those city wankers right - its only the fricken banking elite so why worry- they fucked us before, so its now payback…
(meanwhile many of those go and work for same institutions within the EU -now paying the tax on their HUGE salaries and bonuses into the German/French economies and not ours)
… yep we realy showed em there…
This was yesterdays news
