You should go and live in a park.
Academics are accusing a Tory MP and government whip of âMcCarthyiteâ behaviour, after he wrote to all universities asking them to declare what they are teaching their students about Brexit and to provide a list of teachersâ names.
Chris Heaton-Harris, Conservative MP for Daventry and a staunch Eurosceptic, wrote to vice-chancellors at the start of this month asking for the names of any professors involved in teaching European affairs âwith particular reference to Brexitâ. Neatly ignoring the long tradition of academic freedom that universities consider crucial to their success, his letter asks for a copy of each universityâs syllabus and any online lectures on Brexit.
Tbf @krg_ Mayhem has swiftly distanced the govt from the tosser saying he was only asking for the info as an MP, not as part of the government.
Thought MPs are part of the government, but what the fuck do I know?
The government is made up of MPs, but heâs a Whip an actual part of the govt.
Wringing her hands is not enough. There used to be such a thing as ministerial responsibility. Of course, the absolute gutter tone of politics, and the sheer volume if lies the past couple of years has eroded all that.
Our âdemocracyâ is in a fucking state.
Mad that they wheeled out the Universities minister to defend him, saying he was making the enquiries for a personal project. Which, even if true, is a massive over reach and abuse of his position.
Heâs probably right tho. Iâd be surprised if much time is spent in Universities discussing the pro-brexit angles.
You dont need much time to discuss the pro Brexit angles
On my facebook feed today:
Sounds a bit close minded mate. You should be an University Professor!
The NHS will still be ÂŁ60m per week ahead
Whatâs not to like
Getting pretty close to doing a flowchart for this thread.
Bathsaint bungs in a meme, steps back, and waits for the Remoan votes and posts to roll in. AG makes the same points that Chutney Ferret made last year. All Remainers wilfully ignore any points, especially about trade, yet pronounce economic Apocalypse regardless.
Rinse and repeat.
Iâm almost certain my name is on that list
Isnât this what you do on the Tory / Corbyn threads?
Not really. First, I roll my own memes. Second, I hang about for the fight.
I take it youâd rather I just go away.
On trade, well that is actually the biggest issue with Brexit. Here we are marching to a âno dealâ Brexit, in the capable hands of Davis. Is that a good idea? Should we be leaping for joy? Really?
I donât really know the ins + outs, but itâs lucky Iâm not in charge of the negotiations. I wouldâve told the EU to go fuck themselves by now deffo. That Theresa May must have patience of Saint srs.
Keep talking. Debate about the true implications is lacking to say the least. In/out doesnât bother me, but i would like sensible debate so people know the full ramifications of what appears to be the governmentâs favoured choice of exit.
WTO tariffs will decimate business(40% on some goods) and anyone that thinks otherwise, please show me one country that operates like that successfully?
What is there to debate? Weâll get what we get and have to deal with it. As far as I can see, the options range from pretty bad all the way through to a no-deal disaster. Based on everything Iâve read and heard about this, I can see virtually no upside.
Vague promises about securing fantastic trade deals with China and India, et al? Ha, Iâll believe it when I see it. Our track record there is hardly promising.
What does that leave us with? Tariffs on our exports to the EU. Customs and borders checks at every port. Enormous lorry parks on both sides of the English Channel? And our service sector (which makes up most of our economy) losing all passporting rights into the EU. Unless, by some miracle, this shambles of a negotiating team manage to strike a half-way decent deal. My confidence in that is not far from zero.
