šŸ–„ ⁉ Basic Online Techie Advice

I’m after reasonable options. :unamused:

I am pretty sure you can reallocate some space from D: to C: but I am somewhat lacking in the ā€œhowā€ dept

Yep I think it’s possible to create a disk partition but my geekery is pretty basic. :frowning:

I’m barely computer literate, but I do recall having the exact same problem a couple of years ago on a similar system (at least, similar in the sense that mine has an SSD for the main drive and optical for storage. Turned out that all my pictures and music were being stored on the SSD, as soon as I moved all those to the D drive it freed up the SSD altogether.

Wibble.

Try moving your ā€œDownloadsā€, ā€œMusicā€ and ā€œDocumentsā€ folders to the D drive.

To do this open an explorer window right click on the folder you want to move i.e. ā€œDocumentsā€, then click properties (at the bottom), then chose the ā€œLocationā€ tab

Then change the location, personally I would change the C to a D, then hit the [Move] button.

Also download TreeSize Free, download the portable zip, unzip it and run it…then scan the C drive to see what your largest folders are.

Paste the output here if you want for more advice.

It’s ā€œpasting the outputā€ that has caused the problem.

Unzipping and running it didn’t help either.

As you can see, what I really would like to do is to move the 115 GB of files from my SSD Windows (C) to the HDD and the 212 GB DATA (D) to the SSD. Do I need to partition the HDD to keep the two lots of data separate so I can move the 212 GB DATA (D) to the empty SSD?

It’s doable but you’d need a partition manager or something like that.

I think it will also mess with boot orders and stuff like that.

Did you download TreeSize because I’m surprised you have so much usage on your C drive, a normal Windows installation is only about 60G, would be nice to know what is using all the space.

We all think LITSL should share his porn with the rest of us.

40gb in users is a fair amount, if you expand that you can see which are the bigger ones and move those to the D drive as I detailed earlier.

Also you have a lot in ā€œProgram Filesā€, that’ll be installed programs. Might be worth expanding that and drilling down. There will be temp or log files in there that can be deemed.

Moving Pictures and Documents etc isn’t going to save a lot of space as I have a OneDrive account and they are stored in the Cloud. I only access them on demand.
I think moving ā€œProgram Filesā€ will be the best move but right clicking on the Program Files folder doesn’t give me the ā€œMoveā€ prompt. Can I drag and drop that folder into D Drive?

Yeah but a ZX Spectrum doesn’t have a great memory. Time to upgrade?

This one we have is an IBM. A picture of Lady Slowlane Dragging and Dropping a new disc when it was new…

No

Dragging and dropping are the operative words - they must weigh a ton.

That is the IT ā€œNoā€ for ā€œNo, touch that and you will fuck it foreverā€

Reviewing all the suggestions this morning I came to a thought that usually appears in my mind in relation to geekery…What happens if I fuck this up.

I called them…no problem, a much larger SSD is about 60 quid plus fitting and health check on the other drive too, another Ā£100. Much cheaper than shelling out on another desktop.
