Could someone who is intersex have a cervix? I don’t know, but it seems as though it might be possible… and then they may not be a ‘woman’, or identify/be identified as a woman anyway.
Is Keir Starmer trying to tell us he has a cervix?
Yeah, but people that are intersex are usually toward one end of the spectrum or another. As a community, they’re not super-happy about being used as justification for trans arguments, because they’re far from the same thing.
One group is born with abnormalities that they’d rather not have while the other term is so nebulous it ranges from self-identified to post-op.
@gavstar you have to remember it’s a loooong time since I did Human Biology. Where did you last see it?
But that does make the statement that “only women have a cervix” factually inaccurate, i.e. “not right”. So what did Starmer say that’s wrong?
If you are born with a cervix but are transitioning to and identify as a man then you may see yourself as a man with a cervix. Hth.
Yeah, but much in the same vein as that “pregnant man gives birth” story, the majority won’t agree with you.
Thank you for going to the trouble of asking everyone, that will save polling companies a lot of time.
Do you think a pregnant man gave birth?
I thought we were talking about people with cervixes? Do you still think that saying “It’s not right to say only women have a cervix” is factually inaccurate?
On the basis of the intersex community alone? Possibly, but it is undeniable that you need some form of female genetic instruction to have a cervix.
As I said before, a lot of intersex people would rather not be used as debating pawns in an area which has absolutely nothing to do with them.
Blimey, you’ve been busy with your polling efforts. First you know what ‘the majority’ won’t agree with, and now you speak for the intersex community. Fair play.
Out of interest why don’t you let us know what you really think about the whole subject?
Why is that important? One doesn’t need to express an honestly held opinion to deride the views of others or make strawman calculations!
One simply has to attempt to make one’s own opponent look ridiculous!
Strawperson
Isn’t that a scarecrow?
Ignoring pap’s obvious (and a bit tragic) baiting, I’ll answer your question, though I honestly thought it was pretty obvious what I think.
I believe that the following two statements are factually correct:
“It’s not right to say only women have a cervix” (see my point about intersex people above).
“It’s not right to say that someone has to have a cervix to be a woman.”
I hope that satisfies your interest in a stranger on a forum’s personal opinions
Can you do anything more in the way of explanation than “it’s not right”?
Here’s some education on intersex people. Take a close look at point 4 and try to remember that we’re debating the trans issue here.
The word “transgender” – or trans – is an umbrella term for people whose gender identity is different from the sex they were assigned at birth. The word “intersex” relates to physical sexual characteristics, and not to an internal sense of identity. An intersex person may also identify as trans, but they are separate things, because gender and sex are separate.
Gender vs sex. Fancy that.
I was merely passing comment on whether what Starmer said was incorrect or not. I’ve not mentioned anything to do with trans issues. Sorry if you misunderstood my intention.
I think I’ve understood it quite well, thanks. Probably wouldn’t describe your interactions in the way you did.
