Nevertheless, I have a story to share.
The Unigate milkman that served the Flower Estates always had a boy on his van. I won’t name names, but I remember one nipper I knew riding about on the float and feeling slightly jealous at the time.
When his time was up, one of the nippers we knew better got the gig. He didn’t last long. He told my mum why.
We didn’t have much money in the 1980s. I remember at least one occasion when we had to duck to dive a debt collector. I’ve always been the early riser in my family, both at home and abroad, so I’m always the person that handles morning business.
One morning, this milkman turns up and we’re seven quid in arrears on our milk bill. “Milky” is not happy. He says to me, a ten year old kid, that my mum better have the money the next time he visited.
The old dear, who I didn’t think could exist before 10am in the mornings in any meaningful fashion, flies down the stairs at 8am and says.
“I better have what? I know about you, you cunt. 50p for a wank? Fuck off or I’ll call the Old Bill on you”.
He never came back for his seven quid. The Flower Estates were blessed with a new milkman very soon after.
Was your mum objecting to the 50p? Was that below going rates?

Obs in the real world Pap had to wank him off 14 times. However, I think we can see now why he is so passionate about his kids getting a free lunch. I will go easy on Pap about this. He has earnt those lunches.

I would just like to point out that writing a pap reference program isn’t a mod power. It’s something any third rate developer could do.

I think that ship has sailed. Everyone has had their say. People have collected plenty of upvotes for their contributions, and They Are Welcome To Them, to use a Bear style. I have collected plenty of downvotes, and I’ll live with them, to use my own.
I would rather be candid than be liked, and bringing this thread unexpectedly back on topic, my candid response is that it has been full of self-interest, on all sides, but also contested between people in arguably compromised positions.
People sending their kids to private schools, people about to send their kids to private schools because their wives say there’s no fucking way they’re moving from Cressington and she’ll foot the bill anyway. Teachers leaving the state school system to join the private school system. Former pupils of independent schools that naturally attribute their time there to any success they might have enjoyed afterward.
I will apologise for saying that @thecholulakid no longer gives a shit about teaching poor kids. That was out of order.
I’m not apologising for the post that gave the original offence. I’ve already provided my analysis. The only thing I’d add now that I didn’t then was that TCK’s arguments were also based on parents knowing what he knew as a teacher. They’re just not tenable, and they’re not an excuse for sending your kids private.
