I’ll agree about the Tory Lite. He’s taking the party to the right of the LibDems. But he somehow has to retain the Corbyn supporters
Proof, as if any more were needed that the man is an absolute grade A, 24 carat cunt.
It’s all very strange.
Starmer is Tory Light.
But.
Look at a lot of the world now, “right leaning” Governments all over the place.
Maybe he is reading the room?
Not sure where that leaves Labour values, maybe Corbyn can start something new IF he has the energy, not for this election but maybe the next?
When was the last time a proper left wing govt got elected in this country? Almost 50 years ago
Surely that should tell you something about what the majority of people want
He would be as old as Biden is now - if he really wanted to start something new he should have done if 20 odd years ago during the Blair years
I know The Guardian isn’t to everyone’s taste but this ties in so closely with my post yesterday.
Starmer has worked hard to repair the damage done by his predecessor, to the point of forbidding him from running as a Labour candidate.
I’m prepared to bet that Starmer will not match the number of votes achieved by Corbyn.
That’s just one illustration of how appallingly skewed that wholly agenda-driven Guardian piece is.
I wouldn’t be sure that the Grauniad is strongly behind Starmer. I think the above statement refers to damage as perceived by Starmer.
The preceding paragraph…
It was fractured for many years by the Lib Dem decision to form an actual coalition with the Conservatives in 2010. It fell apart completely in 2019 because too many swing voters decided the prospect of Jeremy Corbyn as prime minister was the most repellent one on the ballot paper.
It’s clearly not referring to Starmer’s view. It’s the author’s view, along with a load of other baseless assumptions in the piece.
Starmer perceives that the Tories have learned how to present Corbyn as a devil-figure which frightened off any possible swing voters.
So to that extent he’s creating a party close enough to the Tories for some soft Tories to switch.
Starmer needs to fuck off before the next election.
Burnham in.
Good article on Starmer, New Labour etc. here, which raises a number of interesting points. Andy Beckett is not by any means a fan of Starmer but he discerns some level of divergence from a straightforwardly New Labour agenda.
On the subject of antisemitism, this is an interesting piece on @lifeintheslowlane lookalike Roger Waters.
Note that he’s not portrayed as sympathetic to the horrendous plight of the Palestinians. That sympathy is sufficient, on it’s own, to label him as antisemitic and imply that he’s pro-Nazi. There’s a parallel with Corbyn, it’s a very easy stick with which to beat someone, as Starmer will gleefully attest.
It’s a disgraceful stick to beat anyone with but when defending the indefensible you’ll use whatever implausible tool you can find.
Does anyone remember when Boris got booed for mentioning that Keir Starmer was accountable for not nicking Savile as director of the DPP?
Remember the outrage? The moral high ground?
Well, that’s fucked now. Keir Starmer’s Labour. Adults in the room.
Well the daft thing about that ad is the stats they use are from 2010 to 2015 - before Rishi was even an MP
And who was the head of the CPS then??
Labour will lock up dangerous child abusers…unless they are part of asian grooming gangs then they will suppress the investigation to preserve community relations and avoid looking racist/islamophobic
Remind me who sat on the Sentencing Council when the sentencing guidelines were agreed in 2012. Wouldn’t that would be the Director of Public Prosecutions. Now who held that office in 2012?
Never understood blue suits anyway…
