šŸŽµ What are you listening to etc

Also I know that it’s a sin to post twice in a row, but this has been in my head all evening like a fucking earworm. There are some gems on r/listentothis that I think a few of you would appreciate, might be worth having a look at. It’s a bit bubblegum but there’s some nice production and it’s catchy as hell.

Good times. Spotted m’self in there

This whole shooting match is now available as a Spotify playlist. I’ll update it as and when. Where I couldn’t get exact songs, I chose the top song from the artist.

And Wes Montgomery, who influenced some of the great guitarists of the sixties, notably Hendrix. The only guitarist I’ve seen play with Montgomery’s technique of picking with the thumb only (incredibly difficult) is Jeff Beck.

This is Round Midnight, which inspired the Bertrand Tavernier movie.

Oh wow, yes. You can hear that influence on Wes Montgomey straight upfront and centre. Stunning.

Well, if we’re onto guitarists (my favourite subject), here’s the genius that is Les Paul:

Furball, have you seen Jazz On A Summers Day? If not, you’ll love it!

Seen it Lou, and yes, it’s lovely. The Les Paul/Mary Ford piece is also outstanding. It reminds me how it’s possible to come at a form of music with no real understanding of the genre, or even a particular liking for it, yet be bowled over by it as it unfolds. That’s what unites these great guitarists of the 40s and 50s - they were brilliant instrumental storytellers.

The wonderful Hank Williams.

Check out the most beautiful steel guitar solo from Don Helms.

Great stuff, Lou. As something of a contrast, here’s the greatest of them all, in a rare recording. (BBC Maida Vale)

One of my favourite Hank songs - and that’s saying something. The silence of a falling star lights up a purple sky…
