~There it is.
All my dirty Postcard love.
Never really got Aztec Camera, but Frame is a much better guitarist than I realised.
But I did get Neil Finn. Here with his brother.
Crowded House at Pompey Guildhall many years ago still one of my favourite gigs.
Been playing this a lot on 6music of late (and just now), everytime I hear it I seem to love it more. Cracking track this:
I see your Astor and raise you a Gustavo.
I tried to hire this guy to score a documentary on string theory (get it?) but was blocked by the most unimaginative (and then some) executive Iāve ever worked with. The next time I heard him was on his debut film composerās gig, doing the soundtrack to Brokeback Mountain.
Just back from Green Man Festival. A couple of honourable mentions (Bill Ryder-Jones/Hookworms/The Fall).
Stand out performance thoughā¦Father John Misty. Just brilliant showmanship. Talented man.

I really enjoyed him at Glasto, too. Shame, I only knew a couple of songs. But, as you say he is very entertaining on stage. His album has since become something I listen to fairly often, I find it odd I like it so much as it isnāt really my usual thing.

Did you check out Calexico on Friday?

Astor unchainedā¦
Piazzolla is indeed brilliant. To tie two threads togther, you can hear his work to incredibly haunting effect on the Argentinian movie Sur, a deeply troubling dreamscape of a film about the damage wreaked by the Junta.

I did. Friday seems a long time ago now - they shouldāve been on my shortlist. They were great - but then I knew they would be. Both my kids loved them too.
Forgot Tom Robinson tooā¦
Thatās lovely - you can see Cole is really enjoying being let loose as a musician. I think the guitarist is Oscar Moore, who is HUGELY influential.
I came to Piazzolla quite by accident whilst skipping the few TV channels we had in the mid '80s. He was playing a live studio concert on BBC2 and the emotional intensity of his music just smashed me in the guts. I hit him at his peakā¦instantly accessibleā¦his Nuevo Tango Quintet were at the peak of their collective powers having just recorded āTango Zero Hourā.
If I need an emotional release I always turn to him. If anyone wants an introduction the1984 gig he played at the Montreal Jazz Festival is available in its entireity on YouTube⦠https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g2EgoGBzi2s
Is Sur on YouTube Furball?
Donāt think so LITSL, itās hard to find at the best of times. I have a DVD thatās a few generations away from the original.
Now hereās a track I DID get to use in a film, and I find it the most transcendently beautiful piece of music.
And hereās a piece I produced (with Vic Coppersmith-Heaven, producer of The Jam) in a flea-bitten studio in Madagascar - since covered by John Williams, the classical guitarist. (Quality is a bit youtube-rough, sorry).

Was my favourite set at Glasto as well, heās a very engaging performer. Sounds better on the album as his songs are quite high-production but heās great to watch. Really funny as well!
