Not awesome, but I am actually listening to Lemon Jelly, before I fall asleep No idea why
Iāve always loved this song, especially Nat King Coleās version of it. But I had no idea of the fascinatingly weird story of its creation. The composer was eden ahbez (lower case because āonly God and Infinity deserve capitalsā). He was a prototype hippy whoād somehow got the song to Cole. When Cole wanted to record it he had to track ahbez down to get his permission. Coleās agent found ahbez living under one the 'Lās of the Hollywood sign.
Incidentally, Cole and the other black musicians in this clip were wearing skin-lightening make-up (something that was imposed on them). How times have not changedā¦
More on ahbez here:
Fuck me, how talented are they?
Theyāre still all rocking acne, FFS. Goosebumps on that one. Great performance.
Love that song, but not familiar with that version.
This is the one Iām more intimate with.
Actually, if I ever went on Stars in Their eyes, I would either sing something by Billy Bragg or Nat King Kole.
His voice disarms and melts me.
I know weāre secretly related now bletch.
NKC was my Grandadās favourite and I grew up listening to his records.
Awesome singer.
Watched this live and thought HElllllooooooo, thatās nice!
Had this on VHS with the adverts cut out by special Goat editing skills. It was a channel 4 coup. Awesome. My Thriller.:
So Goatster, hereās a challenge for you.
Next get-together after a home game, when you can be bother to not be in Tahiti and actually stay until I arrive, you have to buy me sufficient beer to sing a Nat King Cole duet with me.
Iām a cheap date, I reckon a Martini and a hand-shandy should pull me over the line.
Great Album, Matt Johnson was on 6Music Thursday talking about Soul Mining, album of the day. I didnāt realise he was just 19 when he wrote it.
Iām not sure that the stage can handle that many Italian army jackets.
Mind Bomb for me.
Wonderful.
