Sometimes I need a Phwoar
Noooooooooooooooooooooo.
Itās a trap!
You listen to that and THIS comes up next
And you are GONE #nostalgiatrip
Surely this belongs on the āWhat are you wanking to, etcā thread!
Itās now 11 years since I bought āHadestownā an album by Anais Mitchell. Itās a musical based around the classical Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, written by Mitchell in 2006. It was toured in small provincial venues the following year and the album followed in 2010.
The album was well reviewed but hardly set the world alightā¦I loved it and Iām someone who habitually hates musicals. Mitchell had faith in it and reworked and expanded the stage version.
It opened off-Broadway in 2016 for a couple of months and then toured in Edmonton and London. It finally opened on Broadway in March 2019. Itās been a great success ever since winning eight awards at the Tony Awards including Best Musical and Best Original Score.
I think even Iād go to see it if it came back to London.
Anais Mitchell is far right and 8 months pregnant.
The saddest/happiest Christmas songā¦
"No travel plans, no shopping malls
No candy canes, no Santa Claus
For as the day of rest draws near
Itās just the two of us this year
No silver bells or mistletoe
Weāll kiss and watch our TV shows
Iāll come to you, Iāll sing to you
Like itās Christmas in the room
Iāll dance with you, Iāll laugh with you
'Til itās Christmas in the room
No traffic jams, no ice and storm
Far in the house the fire is warm
No Christmas tree, no great parade
Itās just an ordinary day
No parties planned, no place to go
Itās just the two of us alone
And in the house we see a light
That comes from what we feel inside
Iāll come to you, Iāll sing to you
Like itās Christmas in the room
Iāll dance with you, Iāll laugh with you
'Til itās Christmas in the room
'Til itās Christmas in the room
Oh, I can see the day when weāll die
But I donāt care to think of silence
For now I hear you laughing
The greatest joy is like the sunrise
No gifts to give, theyāre all right here
Inside our hearts, the glorious cheer
And in the house we see a light
That comes from what we know inside
Iāll come to you, Iāll sing to you
Like itās Christmas in the room
Iāll dance with you, Iāll laugh with you
'Til itās Christmas in the room
Iāll come to you, Iāll sing to you
Like itās Christmas in the room
Iāll dance with you, Iāll laugh with you
Like itās Christmas in the room
Like itās Christmas in the room"
Iām a big fan of Paddy McAloon. I think he is one of the greatest British songwriters ever, maybe the greatest. For me thereās something mystical about his music that defies analysis, perhaps thatās the definition of a great musician. Heās also the most generous and relaxed of intervieweesā¦
What Iāve been listening toā¦
I have been listening to If Youāre Feeling Sinister by Belle & Sebastian.
etc.
Arse biscuits.
Iām not usually a fan of cover versions, but this recent offering is quite superb.

Essential listening for anyone whoās formative musical years hark back as far as the seventies, and a wonderful listen for anyone of any age with an interest in the early years of punk. A Scotty Rating of 10/10.
Iāve watched this vid in chunks over the last couple of days. Itās a genuinely fascinating peek into a man at his peak (as he admits himself).
The first Belle and Sebastian album I did end to end was āDear Catastrophe Waitressā, which I still really love. If Youāre Feeling Sinister does have a hint of the unknowable about it though, with each listen giving a fresh perspective.
It really is cat music; itās not accessible by the standards of the time. It doesnāt give a fuck whether you like it or not. But when you like it, it purrs.
The first Belle & Sebastian song I heard was āThe State Iām Inā on Mark & Lardās graveyard shift and by the time it finished I was in tears. Some songs are like that for me, they draw you in and youāre hooked.
Donāt dismiss their recent stuffā¦this song was written about the birth of Stuartās sonā¦
