Iām a big Divine Comedy fan but I missed the release of āOffice Politicsā last year and have only just caught up with it. Neil Hannon is a superb songwriterā¦some poignant, some quirky, some funny. Into which category this falls, Iāll leave you to decide.
For Office Workers everywhereā¦
Acquired taste for me, mostly on account of the overplayed National Express. but I love that song now when itās not ubiquitous.
I think most of this forum is Becoming More Like Alfie (especially @saintbletch).
Strange you should say heās an acquired taste because Iām usually an instant like/dislike person.
The first Divine Comedy album I bought was āCasanovaā on the strength of āSomething For The Weekendā but couldnāt get my head around the style, it sounded like the soundtrack from a musical. How I hate musicals. I sent the album back and got a refund.
In the ensuing months I would hear other tracks on the radio and without exception really liked them. I had to eat āhumble pieā and bought the album again. I really love that album.
Another sinner saved.
I struggle to choose my top 5 albums of all time but one place is always occupied by In The Aeroplane Over the Sea.
Love it.
Youāve described exactly the same process I went through except I never made it back into fandom. Your ālike a musicalā point is exactly right. I can appreciate the talent and from time to time I really like a track or two but itās not really for me.
Well as a reborn zealot I have to tempt you with Fin de Siecle Full Album
Chock-full of good songs not without drama but not so much of the theatricality I dislike in musicals.
I really liked Kate Nashās debut album. She had some success and then seemed to be a target for many people and I never really understood why. It seemed to centre around her accent which I found odd given how many male artists sang in her accent. Anyway, foundations is a good song that makes me smile. I love the line āI hope Iām not stuck with this oneā
And by the way, Paul Heaton was so fucking far ahead of his time fashion wise. The man dressed like a fucking Don.
Look at him here in 1987
I could listen to PD Heaton all day.
Brilliant song that. So good that even David Gray couldnāt fuck it up with his annoying wobbly head.
