Warwickshire v Hants - Relegation battle

**Matthew Williams: ** People complain England canā€™t play spin. Same people then complain when county pitches help young English spinners - madness

Peter Gliddon: Canā€™t blame a run out on the pitch

OK geniuses, we get how many points IF we bowl them out?

Then how many runs do we need IF we are to get the totaal of 8 - as that doesnā€™t read like a pitch we could score 300 onā€¦

WICKET Malan (lbw b Leach) 38

Somerset 236 v Middlesex 95-6

Huge breakthrough for Somerset!

Dawid Malan smashes Jack Leach for six, but two balls later heā€™s on his bike.

Leach strikes him on the pad, up goes the finger.

Game on.

First Innings Points (awarded only for performances in the first 110 overs of each first innings and retained whatever the result of the match). a A maximum of five batting points to be available as under:

200 to 249 runsā€¦ 1 point
250 to 299 runs ā€¦ 2 points
300 to 349 runs ā€¦ 3 points
350 to 399 runs ā€¦ 4 points
400 runs or over ā€¦ 5 points

b A maximum of three bowling points to be available as under:

3 to 5 wickets takenā€¦ 1 point
6 to 8 wickets takenā€¦ 2 points
9 to 10 wickets takenā€¦ 3 points

ā€“

So if we bowl them out and then draw that would be 8 points

Could it come down to wickets taken?

Somerset 236 v Middlesex 121-8

If teams finish level on points, most wins determines placing, then fewest defeats, then most points from head-to-head results, then most wickets taken, then most runs scored.

Iā€™m looking into the future hereā€¦

If Middlesex are out for less than 200 and lose to Somerset, they will finish on 146 points.

Somerset would have 147 and survive.

If Hampshire lose at Warwickshire, but take exactly six points from the match, they will also finish on 146 points.

But Lancashire and Hampshire will have won, drawn and lost exactly the same number of matches this season.

What about their head-to-head results? Oh dear, both matches were drawn! Get counting the wickets taken this season folks!

Lunch at Taunton

Somerset 236 v Middlesex 127-8

James Harris and Tim Murtagh have done well to see out the final 20 minutes or so before lunch there.

But MIddlesex are still in real trouble.

They trail by 109 runs.

'Pitch decision could spoil Somerset's day'

Somerset 236 v Middlesex 127-8 - lunch

Anthony Gibson

BBC Somerset

Another Jack Leach marathon spell has taken Somerset to within touching distance of their first imperative for avoiding relegation, which is to bowl Middlesex out for less than 250.

He picked up three more wickets this morning, including the crucial one of Dawid Malan, lbw playing across a straight ball, after a defiant stand of 73 with Paul Stirling, who followed soon afterwards, smartly stumped by an alert Steve Davies.

The pitch is still offering plenty of turn and bounce, and there is still the decision of the ECBā€™s Wayne Noon to come on its acceptability, which weā€™ve been promised at close of play and could yet spoil Somersetā€™s day.

What if they finish level on points?

Regarding the post at 12:24 about ā€˜what if Hampshire and Middlesex finish level on pointsā€™ - I misread the rulebook slightlyā€¦

It would go down to who took the most points from their two meetings - not the results, which were both draws.

Middlesex (19 pts) took one more point than Hampshire (18 pts) from the two games and so they would stay up.

Itā€™s an unlikely scenario - Hampshire would need to make 300-350 in their first innings and still lose the match at Edgbaston - all after day one was washed out!

WICKET Harris (b Overton) 19

Somerset 236 v Middlesex 128-9

Four balls after lunch Craig Overton sends James Harrisā€™ middle stump cartwheeling out of the ground.

Great start for the hosts, not such a good one for the visitors after the break.

Ravi Patel is the last man in.
