:tories: Tories in trouble?

Again, we don’t know how many tears it’s been since payrises have been given to any of its staff, and actually you’re getting more tax into the coffers by them doing that, and paying dividends (which they may not have paid either in seven years) than you would if the payrise wasn’t given as they could still offset against the massive losses outlined in the article above.

Help me out here, Shirty.

Apologies, but I’m a weak and feeble-minded soul, and I’m struggling to multi-task - attempting to do some work and maintain this debate with you.

Are you saying that the company did nothing morally wrong?

Are you saying that the company did nothing legally wrong?

Yeah, same here.

They’ve done nothing legally wrong.

They have potentially done something morally wrong, although I don’t know enough about accounting to say whether they have or not. Looking at their accounts this is the first time in a while that they have made a profit, so have handed out payrises and dividends. I don’t have a problem with that as they may not have had payrises/dividends in a long time. What I don’t know is about moving the profit to previous years as I don’t know what that practice is, so that may well be morally wrong.

Thanks for clarifying, Shirty.

I’ll follow-up later if I can.

My five pence worth (as a qualified insolvency practitioner) - companies / businesses make losses for all sorts of reasons:

  • poor management (not controlling costs, anticipating market changes etc etc)

  • fraud / theft

  • supply chain failures

  • customer failures

  • huge competitor opens in your market. Think corner shop then Tesco buys the pub 50 yds away.

  • working capital shortages / withdrawal of finance

  • loss of key staff

  • regulatory changes

Its not safe to assume its just poor management

I think there are 2 main issues here:

  1. Dividend payment and wage increases when the company make a profit.

  2. Legal, but morally corrupt accounting practices to offset the profits against previous years.

I know nothing about company tax and that sort of thing, so it’s interesting to read posters discussing this and expressing their opinions without sniping at one another.

In a humiliating blow for the Chancellor a motion voicing fears over the cuts’ impact was passed 215-0 - meaning not a single Tory opposed it

Includes 20 Tory MPs.

Ah, now I remember why I think they are all a bunch of useless whining, baying twats.

110k signatures on a petition for a Vote of No Confidence in Cameron - to be debated in the Commons soon.

Wonder whether it will be taken seriously or if we’ll get a room of braying public schoolboys scoffing at the views of the people they supposedly represent?

I signed that petition. I wonder if the debate will be well attended. The leadership is in some flux at the moment. Cameron has seemingly flipped and flopped on the issue, saying that he wouldn’t serve a third term, and now saying he will fight the 2020 election. Meanwhile, members of the Conservatives have been making speeches which political analysts believe convey leadership ambition. This could be a chance to bring matters to a decisive end.

There are also MPs apparently livid at the tax credits stuff. Will anyone be brave enough to step out of line?

To step out of line you have to momentarily lift your snout from the trough.

Fair go from Heidi Allen on her maiden speech:

phwoooor.

It’s certainly an impressive speech if you’re assessing politicians on the basis of saying one thing and doing another. Heidi Allen didn’t rebel in the vote.

She sounds perfect.
