Colour : natural golden, lighter than I expected, then gain, uncoloured (What dDiageo have done with Lagavulin is criminal- its colour used to be natural from the barrel, now sadly its faked⦠so I am told) - Its a lovely light amber more yellow.
Nose: fuck me - not a full peat fist in the face I wa expecting, but its there, a hint of cherry from the half the barrels (so wish this had been all first fill cherry for 25 years) . There is orange and spiceā¦
Now, Ihave around 35ml in the wee dram. Its caskstrngth so at 48.6% but i wont add water for this first taste. Iff needed, I have some water from Islay that is used in the process rather than adding flouride form from the tap
Not for the beginner, but fuck me that is something else. Dont think luxuious smooth, more cricket bat in face , but in agood way. Ift hits you hard with that high alcohol content, but as the heat disappears, teh stunning complexity shows. there is teh expected earthy peatness, the expecte complex spice hinted at from the nose, and then a liquer like warmth the cherry and orange linger on the pallete and evoke a shit eating grin
I heard the nose was that of Tom Jonesās leather trouser crutch after an 18 hour marathon gig in a 40 C heat after he fialed to āshakeā adequatly, no?
Best do some research there first⦠who is the distiller? The only 'Speyside Distillary Co I can find was set up in 1954 but did not begin production until 1990⦠so idea what this is
Am I right in saying that once bottled a 12 year old is still a 12 year old even 20 years later? Iām sure I was told that years ago at a tasting session - I may have been drunk at the time.
Bit of background - would mean a 25 was bottled in 2015 as production really begun in 1990. I think that price is probably a bit high, given a foreign site but worth cracking open and giving a right good tasting⦠could be great. ā¦of course it could be a bit pants and worth more unopened, but thems the choices⦠As mentioned above if I had never opened my lagavulin 1979 distillers it woudl be around Ā£1400 now,but I would have missed and exceptional whisky experience that cost me Ā£47. I dont ācollecrtā just buy to drink.
