The Other Place

I like Papsweb because there’s a nice atmsophere on here and everybody seems to get along, which is more than can be said for SWF at times. Use your god-like powers to keep it this way please O Pap!

I told Pap that I didn’t like his use of the term “best friend” and things got pretty heated.

I believe Sir asked me if I was eight years old

It bothered me so much that I’ve been voting your stuff up in revenge. Have that!

It’s weird how just reading this thread leaves a slightly sour taste, and reminds you of the potential bullshit we can avoid by ignoring the morons.

Deep down we all crave drama, it’s the default setting of most forums after all, but honestly this place is better without it.

Lol forever @ hypo.

“how sad is it people posting about another forum”, whilst making post after post about this place.

But yeah this place is better for the lack of hate and vitriol over there. If they are happier without us, guess it’s a good solution for everyone.

To be honest Pap, I think this site is workking in a way which should negate the antics of any shitemongers. I don’t want to sound smug or self-congratulatory, but I’d reckon that trolling and/or provocation is more likely to be ignored on here than it’s tended to be on SaintsWeb. If people try to provoke, the best answer is not to rise to that bait.

Put another way, I’d agree with Bearsy’s view some way above. You don’t need to do anything; things will take care of themselves.

The only thing I’m interested in are people who have no posts, and have a habit of down-voting the same people consistently. I would ask what we’re gaining from someone joining up just to neg specific people on this site.

If it’s justified negging based on the quality of the post, or just being a genuinely miserable bastard, that’s one thing. If it’s someone signing up just to silently dis people he doesn’t like, and admitting it all on another web-site, that’s another. Let that happen a few times, and we have a real problem.

I’ve faith in this community’s ability to moderate what it sees, but you can’t react to what you don’t know about. Down-votes are silent, for reasons we’ve discussed before. We want people to be able to honestly express disapproval on a post by post basis without recrimination. It shouldn’t be used as a silent mechanism to chip away at others, and ultimately, the integrity of the site.

Voting is a big part of self-moderation. We don’t hand out polling cards. Anyone with an account can vote, and there is implicit trust; we’re assuming that people are acting in good faith, and we do. I’m not saying we’re anything other than what we are; a 70-odd people forum, but your votes should matter, and they matter less if people are gaming the system.

I’ve made no firm decisions, and am leaving the above as points of discussion.

Just out of interest, what’s the point of the voting system? Do we win a prize for best opinion of the week? Only reason I’m asking is because I can’t see the point of negatively voting - surely accomplishes nothing? I couldn’t give a toss if people gave me the down thumb thingy (unless the prize for best opinion is really good).

I’m not sure really. The only time I’ve used it so far is when Tokyo was shamelessly begging for votes and complaining about people downvoting him. Which made me laugh. Sorry Tokes.

Yeah, it was just that CB Fry fella talking about lurking and down voting as though it was some kind of cyber terrorist tactic. Just struck me as childish, couldn’t really understand why it was worth doing. Having said that a lot of stuff on the web perplexes me - I thought it was mainly just used for porn…

On the subject of upvotes and downvotes, I’ve only ever used the former, and I don’t think I’ll be too likely to use the latter. If I don’t like something that’s been posted I’m more likely to ignore it, whereas I’ll be more than happy to vote something up if I like it.

I think downvotes will come in handy for racism, sexism, homophobia and trolling. Context is of course important, but if a particular post has a good number of downvotes then that should be a sure sign that it’s over stepped the mark.

I would rather be admonished by my peers than subject to random and inconsistent moderation

You don’t half talk some sense at times, Bear!

I thought people could see downvotes. I think they should be visible. What’s to hide? You didn’t like a post, you should be able to say that you didn’t like it and have the balls to face any questions about that. I don’t understand the need to hide your opinion.

it has to be that way, cos if ever find out which motherfuckers are downvoting my posts, i will come round their manor and hurt them bad

Fair enough. You leave me no choice but to downvote and then tell the people I have done so either by PM or on the thread. This is the first act of open defiance that your new board has to deal with.

I have downvoted the post of yours that I have quoted.

Oh yeah, that as well.

pap pls forward me fatso’s home address + alarm code. I could also use details of his ethnicity & weight class.

That is one option. The other option is simply to not take away any points when someone down votes.

I can’t believe you bunch of wet weekends are complaining about down voting! I think it’s great!
