Mate of a mate sends a text. “I’m down the food bank”.
Next day, she sends another text “Look at my nice new couch”.
Questions are asked concerning the reconciliation of two seemingly conflicting positions, the poverty connotations of being in a food bank and the affluence connotations of a nice new couch.
“I could afford the couch because I went to the food bank”. No-one hearing that answer was impressed.
Hate sharing this because it’s something a Tory would say, but in this case 100% true. Pretty disgusted by it, if I’m honest, and so is the mate in between.

Yeah that is not how they should be used.
Back in Southampton we had to make referrals to food banks. We would explore finances with them etc. However, with increasing referral rates that made it harder. We would give food vouchers for certain shops (ban on alcohol and cigs). I remeber one person wanting some cash for electric and gas. We advised they needed to come see us at the office with some evidence of lack of cash. She refused.
Sadly there will be some who use a system. Just look at the example our MPs make.
However the is many people who are struggling and if we just think everyone is on the take we become a horrible place.
Anyway back to lunch as last call I had was a woman wailing down phone and I need a break (as she probably does too).

It’s super annoying because the one thing that the Tories are fucking excellent at is making you think other people are taking the piss. Now I’m not going to make generalisations about everyone else using food banks, but there are plenty of people that will have the same lived experience of a piss-taker and extrapolate it.
Before this, I’ve only ever really known one person to really game the system. He’d listed himself as a carer, falsely. Thanks to the Tory cuts, that fucker has to work now.
The problem is that these cuts are wholesale, not surgical. To catch a a fucker like him they have to fuck over shitloads of genuine claimants in real hardship.
