8h Ā·

I am a refugee.

I am a 5 year old child sat in a boat on the South China Sea holding onto my father.

I am the daughter of a soldier that fought in a brutal conflict that lasted two decades and killed over 2 million people, wounded 3 million and 12 million became refugees.

I am the daughter of a man that must leave a wife and two young children to escape the oppression and aftermath of a country still deeply damaged 5 years after the hostilities ended.

I am the older sister of a two year old boy and month old baby girl that I have left behind and yet to know.

I am the daughter of a 23 year old woman who watched her husband take her oldest child into the terrible unknown and a promise to come back and find her.

I am sat on a boat whose illegal passage has been paid for from the sale of my parents wedding rings and all their worldly possessions.

I am escaping my country because my family could only afford to pay smugglers for one adult and one child.

I am with a parent who believed risking his life and mine was better than the half life in his beloved homeland.

I am a child of war. I am a refugee. I seek asylum. I live in a Singapore refugee camp. I am held in the notorious Hong Kong refugee camp. That was 1980.

This is 2020. I am Vietnamese. I am British. I am your wife. I am your family. I am your friend. I am your colleague. I am your neighbour. I am not your enemy.

Do not think for one minute those refugees have made their horrific journey through multiple countries and the world’s busiest shipping lane to seek asylum for Ā£37 a week on the UK benefits system. Do not think that removing safe and legal routes for refugees and making the UK unviable is legally or morally right like Priti Patel would have you believe. The political language and coverage you see on the news is exploitative, dehumanising and hostile to fellow humans. They have been forced to leave their country to escape war, persecution, disaster and many cannot return safely.

These people need help and we need to help them. There is no other story.

Probably the best course of action in the end

There is a potential problem In the offing for next year. There is grade inflation - 38% A or A* and 10% increase on previous years - that we know.

However a lot of students will be deferring a year due to fears of covid and disruption to the academic year. Those kids (some with grades better than their ability would suggest) are going to be in competition with the 20/21 class, who have had equally disrupted sixth form education and potentially more to come - how are they going make this fair for the following year?

I have no doubt that they will fuck it up next year too.

I take your point but it’s never fair.

All the actual historic grades are statistically massaged to meet previous grade distributions. There was never such a thing as an A* performance - only what was left after the politicians had capped or rewarded to suit their acceptable level of grade inflation.

And while we’re on fairness, the algorithm that rewarded small cohort sizes (read… public schools) has been consigned to history.

We’ve traded unfairnesses and gained something slightly more morally right.

All that will happen is that anyone presenting with a 2020 GCSE or A Level will be viewed as possessing a Covid GCSE or A Level.

They will at least have a chance to prove their mettle (or otherwise) at the University that offered them a place.

Well done Gavin Williamson. Now resign you waste of DNA.

I do hope that those schools that have blatantly cheated face some form of sanction

Apparently one school predicted A or A * to every pupil in two subjects whereas previously they had always had a bell curve performance

Unfortunately that odious wanker will remain - as one Tory back bencher said - there is no one in Parliament more devious and he is a nasty bastard when cornered

Results U turn.
Hang on. Is it not too late/irrelevant?
Private school results better, Universities have sent offers & turned down Public school kids.
Basically all the spaces are already filled.
Surely, unless the Unis start again it is pointless.
And then the kids have already booked accommodation slots.
This isn’t over

Reckon they will have to increase uni numbers. They had little choice and had to make decision before GCSE results on Thursday as that would have been a riot. Kid Goat should be ok now.

After clearing this week our numbers are down anyway so there are still plenty of places up for grabs. It’s the students that should have got into the more popular universities that didn’t that are the problem.
