The January Transfer Window 2017

Actually I don’t @steveintheforest . Right now VVD is like Schrodingers Cat - both crocked for quite a while and not. We don’t know how long he is out for, only that it is “weeks”. Which could literally mean anything.

If its 2 weeks then great. But if it’s 6-8 or more then we really are up shit creek without a canoe, let alone a paddle.

We are playing a dangerous game going forward with our 3rd, 4th and 5th choice centre backs. That is the reality for me. One of which is injury prone, only played once in about 2 years and wasn’t even that good to start with.

The club have fucked up as far as I’m concerned. It sounds like they were trying to get somebody in, thereby identifying a need to strengthen (or replace Fonte at least) but ultimately failed to do so for whatever reason. I don’t know what happened with Tasci or Sakho but clearly Liverpool wanting £20m isn’t the reason, by virtue of the fact that Palace got him on loan. Whilst I don’t rate Sakho, he would have been better than nothing.

Yes, Stephens and Yoshida were great against Liverpool however I could argue that players are capable of raising their game and playing out of their skin for a cup semi final and a shot at Wembley. One swallow doesn’t make a summer.

We are also just one training ground knock, one muscle twinge, one clash of heads away from Stephens and Gardos being paired up again. That was a catastrophe against Arsenal and Stephens showed in that game that it was a bridge too far for him at this stage. Throwing him in at the deep end isn’t fair on the lad.

Worringly it also makes me question the black box recruitment system. Somehow it seems as though Fonte leaving has caught us cold, when we are lead to believe the club have succession plans in place for all players. These plans surely should have been fastracked once Fonte got back from the euros with his head up his ass.

Okay, it may well be the case that our preferred targets weren’t available in January. So either make an offer they can’t refuse or get somebody else on ‘the list’ on loan as a stop gap.

I previously posted my musings on why this was a crucial time for us so I won’t go in to all that again. That being said, I don’t feel we have achieved what was necessary in this window.

Perhaps Gabbiadini can score the goals to counter any that leak in at the other end. We shall see.

When we win the next three games 8-6, 12-11 and 7-5, you miserable fuckers will still be moaning.

I think there might be a couple of wum accounts on here now…

We thought we’d get the one bro from Russian, but he got Injure

We thought we’d get the Sakho bro, and if we left it till last minute, Liverpool would end up fronting half his wages , but then Palace come in with More Money Than Sense.

We scrabble around at last minute, but cant sort nothing.

Reed has Egg On Face.

I reckon that’s prob how it went down.

Apparently Tasci got injured recently which put a damper on any deals, and Sakho was a £2m loan fee with £1.2m wages (100k a week FFS) he also wanted to go to London.

Think as well the £100k a week wages (100k a week FFS) for a player that hasn’t played for 6 months, suddenly we have more “Fontes” in the dressing room wanting a pay-rise.

I also get the feeling that had the club managed to get a CB in the fans would soon be getting on his (and the club’s) back as soon as he made a mistake.

Perhaps Gabbiadini can score the goals to counter any that leak in at the other end. We shall see.

My thoughts exactly, “We’re going to score 1 more than you!”

Yeah I agree with the wages argument and the knock on consequences needing to be a consideration. However, they would have known about his wages from the get go which begs the question why they even bothered with an approach in the first place? Were they hoping he’d take a pay cut? That would be rather naive in the context of modern day footballers. Yes Payet took a pay cut but that was arguably for more noble reasons, to be with his family.

At the end of the day Fonte put his transfer request in (written, verbal or otherwise - give a fuck Jose, its all the fucking same to us you silly cunt) on 5th January which left the club with plenty of time to find a replacement. Whether it be an ideal one or a short term solution with someone who can do a job.

I don’t agree with the people who feel cheated and feel Les has lied to them. Clearly they tried to do something but it just didn’t happen for perhaps the reasons stated above by @btripz . That doesn’t make it any less annoying though. I personally feel it was very important to sign a centre back, so the fact that we didn’t is a bit of a worry and as I said before - a fuck up. Clearly not everyone will agree and perhaps they are right. Perhaps our current crop of centre backs will have more good days than shocking days and everything will be rosy.

Not ITK in the slightest, but did read somewhere that one player was a smokescreen and I assume that was Sakho. Apart from the cost and the wages, he just doesnt fit our profile. At least we didnt end up with a waste of space like Caulker. I see poor old Sir Les is getting pelters by the Usual Suspects over on the Dark Side for not supporting Puel, yet he has splashed the cash on Boufal and Gabbiadini and hasnt sold JRod. Yes, we desparartely need another centre half but not a make weight and surely it is better to wait to get who you want instead of blowing cash on a second rate player. Lets just pray that Virgil is back sooner rather than later.

Chris Samba’s on a free - worth a punt til the end of the season? Failing that, Martin Caceres is also about but his wages will be huge so can’t see that happening.

I signed him on Free in football manager. At start, he wanted like £95k pw and I was like, no tks. Then later on, when no-one had picked him up, he was reduced to be Reasonable. He done brilliant for me. We won the league, fa cup, league cup and Uefa cup. It was quite a gd season for Saints FC.

Isn’t that called negotiation.

Les Reed : You want him off your books, will take him on loan, make sure he’s not the disruptive influence that that Fonte was. Will give you £500k loan fee and you pay 75% of his wages! Fair

Liverpool Bloke : Nope, you’re desperate for a CB, you buy him now for £10m, no wait, you’re desperate you can have him for £20m, No loan we ain’t paying any more for him than we have to.

LR : OK, maybe a cool million loan fee and you pay half his wages.

LB : Maybe, we do want him off our books…hold on my wife is on the other line

BFS (on the other line) : Alright there Liverpool Bloke, that Sakho he looks handy, big bruiser with an attitude, just my sort of player. Will give you £2m loan fee, what’s his wages? £100k a week? No worries we’ll cover that? And whilst we’re at it here’s £3m just for yourself, sorry his agent, which we’ll get 50% back and I’ll give you 750k of that.

LB : Deal but don’t go gobbing off to any fake sheikhs about it

BFS : Deal

LB (back on line 1) : Hi Les, yes, sorry Sakho has decided his heart’s in London, sorry. Yeah love to your wife and kids too. Bye

LB (hanging up) : Opens chrome browser to search for new cars

Clearly it was their way of getting us back for flogging them Lovren.

Nice piece on the Sakho saga

Someone on twitter has suggested that a club unknown cancelled a last minute transfer for a CB with us, any one know anything about this?

According to the Mail, we had a deal with Tasci to come here on loan but at the last minute he demanded £3m tax free. We pulled the plug at that point and Palace moved in, but also said no to his wage demands. Perhaps this was it?

Sakho has a little bit of Ballotelli about him - and not in a good way.

No, the one I was thinking of was Swansea laughing in our face when we enquired about Jordi Amat!!

Did not want him at all, nothing but trouble and not that good. Let’s face it, if he can’t get in the Liverpool first team, then he is no good for Southampton FC.

Never convinced by him tbh - good at PSG in short bursts but has really flattered to deceive at Liverpool. Good defender but shocking on the ball and very error prone. Considering our record with buying talent in, i’m happy we didn’t spend 20m & 120k pw on somebody we already know is a bit shit and i’m happy to see who we get in the summer instead. Can see him doing well at Palace in a more limited role but I don’t think he suits our system or style at all.

Provided VVD’s injury isn’t too bad i’m content enough with our choices until the end of the season - VVD & Yoshi with Stephens/Gardos/Bertrand to rotate in a pinch is a lot better than most teams in the league have at their disposal. Hopefully we have our captain back soon though…

Jack Schitt has risen from the ashes and posted following on twitter:

"Some [unofficial] January Window Commentary…
Apparently some of you lot have been having a meltdown of monumental proportions over our transfer dealings this window, so I have been requested to pass on a little unofficial information, by way of commentary on how certain things unfolded.

As I shared back in the summer regarding Jose Fonte, [which was mainly called ‘bullshit’ on the internets before the season began to unfold] – our dearly beloved Captain came back from the Euros with an ego so overly inflated it struggled to fit through the dressing room doors at little old Southampton. The only thing keeping him from floating off into the clouds, was the “Winners Medal” around his neck, the weight of which just about kept him in fleeting touch with the ground.

His general “I am unbelievably wonderful, aren’t I?!” attitude, whilst at first tolerated and to some degree indulged due to Jose’s previously widespread popularity, began to rub quite a few players and staff at the Club up the wrong way, as it continued into the season, and showed no signs of abating. The fact he still had the support of some senior players due to their previously accrued respect for him, caused something of a split between some of the players. It was not particularly nasty or accrimonious, but certainly not the easiest atmosphere for the players and staff to work with at times. “Awkward” was a word that came up a lot to describe some of the working relationships at Staplewood.

The Club would have kept Jose until the summer [due to lack of available preferred options in Jan window], but it was Claude himself that decided he wanted to move him on now if we could, to resolve a lot of the underlying bad feeling which can lead to rifts. The Manager just wanted it sorted, so he could begin fostering the kind of team spirit he desires to build up again at our Club, everyone pulling in the same direction, with no distractions or divided loyalties.
Obviously Claude cannot say so himself publicly, but he found Jose to be “très difficile” to work with. Something of a “thorn in the side” of the way he likes to work on the training ground also, due to varying kinds of “interferences”.

Whilst he is missed by some of the players who still liked and respected him – already there is a vast improvement in the atmosphere around the Club now that the Ego has landed in pastures new.

It might not look like it to some from afar, but it really was in the Club’s best interests that a relationship which was growing in toxicity was brought to a premature end. There are nothing like the hard feelings as when Lallana left throwing out toys and refusing to play; it was simply for the best that Jose [and we] moved on.

Ultimately, Jose left as that is what Claude Puel wanted.

Once it was clear that was to be the case and there would be no resolution found – we pressed on with the matters of how to proceed.

Defensively speaking, our main target was Fabian Schär from Hoffenheim. We believed we had an understanding on a fee for him, but when Virgil got injured and the Fonte situation was becoming more public, the fee suddenly rose by more than £5m, ‘allegedly’ because Hoffenheim were being asked to up their bid for the player they wanted as a replacement.

We were not prepared to pay over our valuation, and moved on to our second target, who is playing at a top Portuguese side [I was asked not to say who for reasons pertaining to the Club in question]. We previously were of the understanding that the player would be keen to join us, and came to an agreement with his Club – however, when it came to tying things up with the player’s agent, we learnt that circumstances had changed, and the player did not want to move abroad until the summer, due to current personal circumstances / family reasons.

We moved onto our third target, Mamadou Sakho, but considered the required fee to be ridiculously inflated under the circumstances, and the wages asked for by the player to be extortionate for the level of ability on offer. So…

we moved onto the alternative plan of attempting to bring forward a potential deal we were looking into for the summer, namely Serdar Tasci from Spartak. His contract is set to expire in the summer, but we tried to bring him in on loan now with the view to offering a permanent contract at the end of the season if all went well.

We agreed a loan fee with the club, but felt the player’s wage demands were unrealistic. We were still hopeful of coming to an agreement as the closing of the window loomed, but an injury to the player effectively ended our interest at this time.

We did have another “iron in the fire” even then, which we could have got over the line in time – Claude was asked for his further input, but it was his decision to stick with what we have. Claude has been very impressed with Jack Stephens, and wants to give him further opportunities to improve. He has also been very pleased with the progress of Florin Gardos in training since returning from injury. He is very rusty from so long out, but Claude apparently sees a lot to work with in him, and said his return is already like having a new player. Full of “interesting possibilities” I should imagine.

No truth to Jordy Amat rumours.

Virgil’s injuries [plural] are complicated, but not as bad as we first feared. [Unofficially] - his achillies tendon was not ruptured [a very small tear which is already healing well], along with some minor ankle ligament damage, shallow hairline metatarsal fracture and heavy bruising of the foot. We won’t be seeing him again for a few weeks, but he shouldn’t be out for months as has been widely reported. If his recovery goes as well as we hope, Virgil could be back in training in around four to six weeks or so.

Message ends."
