Is it me, or is this getting worse every year?

#2

Are you saying that you made the decision to watch an appalling show where record companies take it in turns to promote themselves, a show with a track history of bland mediocrity, a show clearly aimed at 12-year-olds, and this show you chose to watch wasn’t that entertaining?..

#3

I know, I just have myself to blame. :lou_sad:

The Guardian described Drake and Rihanna’s performance as “rutting”.

We could have a discussion about the #britssowhite instead.

#5

Was it ever much cop?

Ooh, somebody’s got a pineapple on their head! Ooh, she’s wearing a Union flag dress! Ooh, he’s just wiggled his bum at a paedophile!

How edgy.

#6

I thought the Bowie tribute and speeches were pretty good. So was James Bay. Sorry.

#7

Any Bowie tribute is beyond criticism - within reason.

However it is open season on the other 95% of the show.

Granted, I’m basically her number 1 fan boy, but I thought Lorde nailed it.

That’s the only bit I saw, tbh. Couldn’t really care less. Did have some fun trolling idiots on facebook crying about how they wish people would stop talking about the lack of diversity.

Fave was all those harking on “What about the MOBO’s?!”.

#9

Good move getting his band along to play.

#10

So is that a version of “twerking” ??

#11

Music isn’t dead but I don’t think it’s very well at the moment.

#12

It has been suffering from Cowell’s Disease for a while.

BRITs are about the mainstream, always have been always will be (bar the occasional nod to something else).

Has the mainstream ever been the greatest barometer of the overall health of any medium? I wouldn’t say so. The best of a medium is usaully found when you scratch beneath the surface a bit.

Which, I think, is where a lot of where the frustration with the BRITs lack of diversity comes from. Grime is a truly UK based genre that is really starting to make inroads on a scale greater than just the isles. Whilst that hasn’t neccessarily turned into chart success, it is gaining traction it has not seen before and in a way a lot of ‘big’ British bands (Oasis) failed to do so oversea’s.

Granted, it won’t be to everyone’s tastes and that is fine. But it is disappointing that an award ceremony that appears to be about rewarding the best in British music over the past year to entirely ignore the rise of an innovative genre that is starting to make an impact and gain attention from major artists in different (granted, similar) genre’s from around the world is something that deserves at least some kind of nod.

Heck, even Drake showed up at a Skepta gig after the ceremony last night.

So yeah, the mainstream is what it is. You rarely see the best, or most innovative stuff there. It follows that a ceremony there to prop up the mainstream is going to be a bit bland. I don’t think that is neccessarily a true reflection of the larger picture of the music scene.

I get that it is all about celebrating achievement and all that malarky and that it is hard to avoid Adele etc, but it would be nice if they had a niche section for the cool stuff that is bubbling away in a universe somewhere clear of Radio 1. Perhaps they do something like the Oscars where the obscure stuff is dealt with off TV?

#15

I didn’t watch it but some of the stuff you guise are posting, about Rihanna Rutting and the absence of Grime, is making me think I Missed Out.

#16

Because I dont like something it doesn’t mean its bad but in the sake of British people copying yanks I make an exception and grime is shite, why dont these lads wear bowler hats as opposed to West Coast Gangster shit, unless they mean West Country and then why aren’t they dressed up as pasties?

#17

The best ever moment of the Brits, or the aftermath at least.

#18

I think (and its taking a big leap of faith/dose of assumption) I know what you are getting at…but I could be completely wrong…
