It’s just five weeks since Oleksandr Usyk beat Tyson Fury to become the first undisputed heavyweight champion in almost 25 years.
The landscape of heavyweight boxing appeared clear at the time, with the pair surely set to rematch for the belts at some point in the future, but the IBF had other ideas.
According to their rules, Ukraine’s Usyk would have to face mandatory challenger Daniel Dubois next - who beat Filip Hrgovic earlier this month for the interim belt - or face being stripped.
Usyk asked the IBF to reconsider their stance, before eventually vacating his championship on Tuesday, offering the belt as a “present” to Dubois and Anthony Joshua.
Dubois is likely to be upgraded to IBF champion with the 26-year-old set to make the first defence of his title against former champion Joshua.
