Puel: No new injury concerns

Show/hide article…

Saints head to KCOM Stadium on Sunday, just a few days after recording a famous 2-1 victory against the Italian giants, at St Mary’s.

Puel was without a number of injured players for that game, including Shane Long, Cédric and Matt Targett.

None of those will be available for the trip to Humberside this weekend, but Puel also has no additional fitness concerns after the clash with Inter.

"I don’t think we will see the squad change for this week, because all the injured players are still unavailable, like Long, Targett, Hesketh and Pied,” he said. “We don’t change the squad.”

Puel hopes the upcoming international break will give some of those players a chance to get closer to fitness.

"I hope so,” he said. “We will see this, for example, with [Cédric] Soares.

“Perhaps he comes back the next week for the training sessions and after, for other players, we will see this.

“The international break is always difficult, because we are going to have many players selected for international games and they cannot recover, but it’s a good thing also, because the squad is good, with good players and international players, and for the future this will be important.”

Claude Puel: This Southampton ace could be one of the world’s best

Show/hide article…

Van Dijk has been a dominant force in Southampton’s defence and helped his side to a 2-1 win over Inter Milan in the Europa League on Thursday night. And Puel has no doubt his star centre back has what it takes to be the very best. Puel, whose side travel to Hull tomorrow, said: “Since the beginning of the season Virgil has made progress. Sometimes he didn’t concentrate.

“He is improving tactically and he is fantastic in the air” “He is improving tactically and he is fantastic in the air. He has all the qualities to become the best defender in the world. “He is still a youngster and he must continue his work and his progress. Sometimes he needs to defend with 50 or 60 metres behind him. It is a new thing and difficult to defend with space behind you. “When you come up against a good team or a fast striker it is important to anticipate the opponent.”

Saints pulled off one of their greatest ever wins by coming from behind to beat European heavyweights Inter. But Puel has warned his players to quickly leap off cloud nine to conserve energy for their trip to the Tigers. He said: “After the game it is normal for the players and staff to be happy for the result and quality of the game against a big team. “It is now finished and it is important to come back on a good level without emotion. If you stay in this feeling you lose energy.”

Puel: Van Dijk can be world’s best

Show/hide article…

Van Dijk turned in yet another impressive display against Internazionale, which included scoring the equaliser to set up a famous victory.

And Puel believes he can become of one of the best defenders in the world if he keeps improving at his current rate.

Puel said: “I think Virgil since the beginning of the season can make progress and also I think the play is different to the last year.

“Last year he could defend with strong work back on the pitch and for him this year is different because sometimes he has to defend with 50 or 60 meters behind him.

“It is a new thing and that is difficult because it is hard to defend with the feeling to leave the space behind you, but it is important for me to have a high level.

“Virgil has also improved tactically and is fantastic in the duel."

He added: “For me he has all the qualities to be one of the best defenders in the world. No problem for this.

“I think now it is important he has this ambition to become a great player and one of the best centre backs in the world.

“At the moment in the Premier League, and for the next the world.

“He has all the qualities, he make progress every game and it is important he continues this work.”

Flannigan: It’s amazing to be back

Show/hide article…

The 20-year-old, who has been sidelined since last November with a knee injury, replaced Richard Bakary in the second-half at Landore Training Ground.

“It’s amazing to be back,” explained Flannigan.

“I’ve worked for such a long time to get back, and this has always been the end goal. This is where I really wanted to be.

“To get back on the pitch means everything to me, and also to my family and all of the staff that have put a lot of effort into getting me where I am to today.

“Recovering from injury has been the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do, but it’s taught me a lot about myself and my body.”

Flannigan played half an hour at right-back against Swansea and helped Saints to record a 1-0 victory in Wales.

Despite not feeling 100%, he was pleased to get the minutes, three points and a clean sheet under his belt.

“I felt a little bit off the mark this evening,” Flannigan continued.

“But it’s not about that. It’s about getting back into the action and getting the game time.

“All of the lads performed really well to get the clean sheet and I am buzzing for all of them to get the win.

“Hopefully now, personally, I can push on and get some more minutes under my belt.”

Jack Wilshere? Ross Barkley? Phil Thompson on five who could be in England frame

Jack Wilshere? Ross Barkley? Phil Thompson on five who could be in England frame

As Gareth Southgate prepares to select his next England squad, Phil Thompson gives his verdict on five players who could be in contention.

Southgate will name a 23-man party on Sunday for the World Cup qualifier against Scotland at Wembley on November 11.

Glen Johnson earned a shock recall when the interim boss picked his first squad last month but who could force their way in this time? Thommo, who made 42 appearances for England, assesses five players who could be in the frame.

I was always told that you get picked for national team on the basis of what you do for your club, but there’s a lack of English players delivering in the Premier League right now.

Redmond has been doing well for Southampton and you’ve got to have that message for the other players to know they have got a chance, especially having done well under Southgate with the U21s.

Centre-back has been a contentious position for England, with Phil Jagielka, Chris Smalling and Gary Cahill all having difficult starts to the season.

Jagielka has been left out of the Everton team and Smalling has missed United’s last two games, so will Southgate turn to Gibson, who has been in exceptional form for his club?

He’s going to be a difficult one. We’re talking about players who have impressed for their club, but I’m not sure Wilshere has done enough in that sense.

I think he’s getting his fitness back but there’s still a question over his form. His fitness is getting there but he’s still not reached the level where he can dominate games.

Jordan Pickford ended up taking Heaton’s place after he withdrew due to injury and has continued to impress in goal for Sunderland.

However, I think Heaton is still ahead in the pecking order. I would think it would be very unfortunate for him not to get another chance, even just to show what he can do in training.

Has Barkley done enough? I’m not so sure at the moment. He was better against West Ham but think it will actually do him much more good to train with his club and get his form back.

He’s one of England biggest talents, but I can’t contradict myself and say he should be in the squad when he’s not delivering with enough consistency. It wouldn’t surprise me if he was back in there, though.

He was one of those players at the end of the Euros that I was screaming out for, because he’s got that ability to change a game. I think him not getting any games in France dented his confidence, which we’ve seen in his club form.

Do you agree with Thommo’s assessment? Who do you think deserves an England call-up? Tweet us @SkyFootball or leave a comment below if you’re reading on skysports.com.

Puel: van Dijk can be world great

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel has challenged Virgil van Dijk to fulfil his potential and become one of the best defenders in world football.

The Dutch centre half was again immense for Saints as he scored his first goal of the season and captained the team to an historic victory over Inter Milan at St Mary’s on Thursday night.

Upon taking charge of the club Puel says he was instantly impressed by van Dijk, but felt the 25-year-old was only playing at 60-70 per cent of his potential.

However, with a change of system and tactics, Puel thinks van Dijk is upping his game and insists he can become one the very best in the business.

He said: “I think Virgil since the beginning of the season can make progress because sometimes he was not concentrated, and also I think the play is different to the last year.

“Last year he could defend with strong work back on the pitch and for him this year is different because sometimes he has to defend with 50 or 60 meters behind him.

“It is a new thing and that is difficult because it is hard to defend with the feeling to leave the space behind you, but it is important for me to have a high level.

“When you play against a great team with a striker who is very fast it is important to the possibility of the opponent.

“Virgil improves tactical also and in the duel is fantastic.

“For me he has all the qualities to be one of the best defenders in the world. No problem for this.

“Virgil has the answer for this and has to continue his work and his progress.”

He added: “I was lucky because I train many very good players in all the positions, every time international players.

“But I think when I saw Virgil for me he played 60 or 70 per cent of his quality, because he stayed I think with good comfort, without exploring all his qualities.

“I think now it is important he has this ambition to become a great player and one of the best centre backs in the world. At the moment in the Premier League, and for the next the world.

“He has all the qualities, he make progress every game and it is important he continues this work.”

Saints signed van Dijk for what now looks like a bargain £12m from Celtic in 2015 and he has flourished in the Premier League.

Puel has spoken with van Dijk to tell him how good he can be, and believes the player has the mentality to see it through.

“Of course, since the beginning of the season it was a little difficult with him,” explained Puel. “I don’t keep him in comfort with, for example, the new system and the different philosophy. It was different for him.

“For the first time to defend with a large space in his back, and this is a feeling that is difficult and different.

“It was important to take this and the capacity to defend in a duel or one against one with a player. It is very important with the concentration also.

“He has all the possibilities with the technical, with the physical. He is intelligent and a good character. It is all interesting.

“His development is for him. He is ambitious and now it is important he can give a good answer every time with a good regularity without mistake, without a bad game, and play every time at a good level is very important for him and for his future.”

Saints to continue football focus

Show/hide article…

Saints will continue to focus on football regardless of any ongoing speculation over whether a Chinese group will attempt to secure a £200m takeover of the club.

Saints boss Claude Puel is adamant that he and his squad will continue to push forward on the field, leaving those in power behind the scenes to determine the best path for the future off of it.

Talks with Lander Sports Developments are still in the early stages, and there is unlikely to be a clear indication for some time as to whether their interest will lead to any sort of investment, and what shape any potential investment could take.

For Puel the focus remains on football.

He said: “For the moment it is speculation. I cannot say something about this.

“I think for the future if something arrives I think it is the best people, the best person, to answer is the chairman.

“I said this two days ago that I give all my confidence to the chairman and all the people that work in the club.

“I think Southampton is a good club with a good stability, a good balance, good quality and organisation.

“For the moment and for the future it makes this club a good thing for the future of the club.

“For me it’s important we continue this work, my work, to improve the young players to have I hope results also and to continue to develop this club. This is the most important.”
