Hull vs Southampton team news, possible line-ups and more

Show/hide article…

Hull could have winger Robert Snodgrass available for their Premier League match with Southampton after he recovered from an ankle injury earlier than expected.

The Scotland international was initially ruled out for up to a month after suffering the injury in late October but returned to training on Friday and could be in contention, with Dieumerci Mbokani available after he recovered from a hamstring injury.

Allan McGregor (back) and Brian Lenihan (knee) have returned to training but this match will come too soon for the pair to return, while Andrew Robertson (calf), Moses Odubajo (fractured kneecap) and Alex Bruce (Achilles) remain sidelined.

Southampton have no fresh injury worries following the Europa League win over Inter Milan as the squad prepare for Sunday’s trip to Hull.

Striker Charlie Austin, defender Ryan Bertrand, midfielders Sofiane Boufal and Steven Davis were all on the bench on Thursday night, so could come back into contention.

Defender Cedric Soares is stepping up his rehabilitation from a foot problem, while striker Shane Long, defender Matt Targett and goalkeeper Alex McCarthy all have hamstring injuries and defender Jeremy Pied remains out following knee surgery.

Hull City have lost all four of their previous Premier League meetings with Southampton – the only side they’ve lost 100 per cent of their Premier League games against that they’ve played more than once.

Indeed, Saints have won their last six league games against Hull, since a 0-5 loss in the Championship in March 2008.

Only twice have Southampton had longer winning streaks in league competition than they currently do against Hull City – eight vs Newport County (1922-1955) and seven vs Crystal Palace (2009-2015).

Dusan Tadic has created 28 goalscoring chances this season – only Dimitri Payet has created more (33). However, Southampton are yet to score a goal from a chance created from the Serbian this season.

Hull City are currently on a run of six successive defeats in the Premier League – they haven’t lost seven league games in a row since October 1980 in the third tier.

Hull have scored three goals in their last six Premier League games, one fewer than Charlie Austin in his last six Premier League appearances (4).

Southampton have conceded just four goals in their last six Premier League matches, while opponents Hull City have conceded 20 in the same period.

Hull City have picked up just two points from their last nine Premier League games played on a Sunday (W0 D2 L7).

Southampton have won six and lost just one of their last nine Premier League games played on a Sunday (W6 D2 L1).

Hull City have made a league-low 114 touches in the opposition box this season.

U18 Preview: Swansea vs Saints

Show/hide article…

And manager Craig Fleming knows from personal experience that the Swans will be a difficult side to break down.

“As always at this level it will be a tough game,” he explained.

“They’ve got some good players and are a well organised side. I know their coach - I used to play with him!

“So it will be a tough game. There are no easy games in this league. Bottom can beat top on their day, as we’ve seen recently.”

A youthful Saints side suffered a 3-0 defeat at home to Fulham in their previous league outing.

However, Fleming is pleased to see his predominantly under-16s and 17s-filled side gaining valuable under-18s game time.

“We’ve learned a lot from the Fulham defeat,” he continued.

“We’ve gone through the goals and the first-half where we didn’t perform as well as we can, so it’s been a productive week.

“With the way the lads have progressed up to the 23s and beyond, we are fundamentally working with the 16s and 17s, so we know it’s going to be tough.

“But it’s a learning process and the lads are getting good minutes at a level which physically is tough for them at the moment.”

Puel: We need points as much as Hull

Show/hide article…

While Saints are currently inhabiting the top half of the division, Hull are 18th, having picked up just one point from their last eight league matches.

But Puel says the visitors need the victory just as much as the home side.

“They need points, but for us it’s the same thing,” he said. “It’s a very important game and I hope we can go there with a good feeling, a good attitude, and a good aggressivity to play this game.

"Hull City is good in defence, quality, strong, and they try to play football. They play at home, in front of their fans, and it will be important to give a good answer. It’s always difficult to play against this team and all these teams in general.”

Hull v Southampton preview: Robert Snodgrass in line for timely return

Show/hide article…

Hull could have winger Robert Snodgrass available when they host Southampton at the KCOM after he recovered from an ankle injury earlier than expected.

The Scotland international was initially ruled out for up to a month after suffering the injury in late October but returned to training on Friday and could be in contention. Forward Dieumerci Mbokani is also available after he recovered from a hamstring injury.

Southampton, meanwhile, have no fresh injury worries following their famous Europa League win over Inter Milan.

Hull duo Allan McGregor (back) and Brian Lenihan (knee) have returned to training but this match will come too soon for the pair to return.

Andrew Robertson (calf), Moses Odubajo (fractured kneecap) and Alex Bruce (Achilles) remain sidelined. Adama Diomande misses out through suspension.

Southampton have conceded just four goals in their last six Premier League matches, while opponents Hull City have conceded 20 in the same period.

Southampton were made to look very ordinary at Chelsea, but Hull are struggling badly. They can’t score a goal or win a game and I can’t see anything but a Southampton win here.

It’s a good thing Hull got off to such a good start or they’d be dead and buried by now, they’d be below Sunderland. Southampton are a good team and seventh or eighth will be a very good season for them.

Charlie Austin struggled last week but some games you have to write off and I think he’ll be back on the scoresheet.

Hull head into Sunday’s top-flight encounter with Southampton on the back of six straight top-flight defeats and can be backed at 17/4 with Sky Bet to hit back with a victory. The Saints came from a goal down to beat Inter Milan on Thursday night and are odds-on favourites (7/10) to come away from the KCOM Stadium with all three points.

Charlie Austin, a second-half substitute in midweek, is expected to be restored to the visitors’ starting team and he’s 7/2 to open the scoring 11/2 to grab two or more. Southampton finished sixth last season and are 20/1 for a top-four finish following a bright start to life under Claude Puel.

Heavyweights all want this midfield star… but another Prem side has entered the fray

Show/hide article…

Atalanta star Franck Kessie is being tracked by Southampton

It was claimed last month that Chelsea, Arsenal , Manchester United and Manchester City are all keen to secure his services.

But Claude Puel faces stiff competition from the Saints’ Premier League rivals.

Italian news outlet CalcioMercato claim Southampton are keen on the 19-year-old star.

And it’s not just English heavyweights in the running for the playmaker.

Serie A trio Juventus, Inter Milan and Napoli are also keen.

“They [Arsenal] were here in Italy to watch him”, he told Goal.

U23 Report: Swansea 0-1 Saints

Show/hide article…

An early strike from Tyreke Johnson secured three points for Saints in their second Group A fixture, as they made amends for their defeat to Bristol City in their opening group game.

Technical Director Martin Hunter made six changes to the side that lost 2-0 to Derby County last time out, with Lloyd Isgrove and Olufela Olomola, who made his first team debut in the EFL Cup last week, both starting the game.

The first chance of the game fell for the hosts when Aaron Lewis’ dangerous cross was cleared as far as Dan James, who saw his early effort crash against the post.

But on six minutes, it was Saints that made the breakthrough when Isgrove breezed past two defenders before picking out Johnson at the back post, who stooped to head beyond Lewis Thomas.

It was a half of few clear-cut chances, but Johnson was involved again when he picked up a loose pass before Thomas O’Connor found Olomola, who turned well before seeing his low drive saved by Thomas.

Towards the end of the half, Callum Slattery worked back to intercept possession in typically industrious fashion, but despite a neat one-two with Johnson, his shot was comfortable for Thomas.

The hosts probed for an equaliser, but Saints showed their resilience to see out the first half with their lead intact.

After the break, it followed a similar pattern. Alex Samuel forced a smart reaction save from Adam Parkes with his angled drive, before Joe Rodon’s header deflected off Ollie Cook to force Parkes into another good stop.

Soon after, Rodon also saw a free header drift wide from substitute George Byers’ corner.

On 65, Jake Vokins’ powerful run down the left side was followed up by an inch-perfect cross for Olomola, who saw his header saved by Thomas from point-blank range.

Saints stood up to everything Swansea threw at them late on, with Jake Flannigan also making his return from a long injury lay-off in the second half, to see the game out and move on to three points from two group games.

Jaïdi: It was a great performance

Show/hide article…

Tyreke Johnson’s early header proved the difference between the two sides at Landore training ground for their first win in the group.

And Jaïdi was delighted with the performance after they bounced back from defeat to Derby County last time out.

“It was a tremendous performance and a good reaction from last week. We prepared everything for the boys to get ready and we had a great response,” said Jaïdi.

“They showed a big desire and a great understanding of what we spoke about throughout the week.

“We started a little bit on the back foot, but as soon as we had the ball back we had a great opportunity at the start of the game.

“We didn’t have as many chances as we normally do but one chance got us the three points and the performance was great.

“We played against experienced boys who are probably physically bigger. One example is Jake Vokins who did very well against Alex Samuel, who was probably Swansea’s best player.”

As well as being clinical in attack, Saints were also resolute defensively to keep the hosts at bay.

Jaïdi added: “It was a great set up. It was a good performance from the three midfielders especially who kept their discipline and shape to screen the back four.

“We know Swansea would do a lot of rotation in midfield areas and link with the wide players so we were pleased.”
